as an Engineering Project Manager. You will be accountable for driving the technical solution for the assigned programs.  You will provide technical leadership and management on research and development (R&D) efforts, coordinate interdepartmental resources, present at customer design reviews, and support auxiliary internal research and development (IRAD) & capture efforts.

 

You will lead the research and development of autonomous and artificial intelligence systems, including planning, scheduling, status, cost account management, and team oversight for the research and development efforts.  This position will report to the Chief Scientist of Autonomy and Artificial Intelligence of Saab, Inc.’s Autonomous and Undersea Systems Division and work closely with university partners, especially Purdue University.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead Ph.D.-level R&D efforts associated with research, development, Integration and Test, and Engineering Services efforts.

  • Lead multi-disciplined engineering teams.

  • Engage with customers to ensure project cost, schedule and technical requirements are met.

  • Ensure effective and efficient implementation of metrics and tools to proactively manage the engineering content of programs.

  • Engage with product vendors & colleagues as required to ensure product integrity. Identify opportunities for product improvements that improve overall program affordability, as well as opportunities in adjacent market spaces.

  • Perform the role of interface to the Chief Engineering and Program Management organizations providing program status, issues and recommendations.

  • Perform project planning including staffing, cost account management, risk management and proposal development.

  • Socialize key milestones with industry, academia, and government through conference presentations, technical paper publications, and media relations.

  • Develop cost estimates and support proposal efforts.

  • Support Strategic Planning and Engineering reviews.

 

Skills and Experience:

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • BS Degree in a computer science, mathematics, physics, or related engineering discipline with 10-15+ years of experience OR MS Degree in computer science, mathematics, physics or related engineering discipline with 5-10 years of experience.

  • Direct experience as a Technical Lead, Principal Investigator, Project Manager and/or Engineering Program Manager for research & development and software programs.

  • Wide-ranging experience including technical and project performance and understanding of the products and work required to perform a broad spectrum of tasks within the research and development capture life cycle.

  • Ability to guide a technical team in capturing, understanding and implementing system design requirements. Demonstrated ability to lead multi-disciplinary engineering team, providing clear guidance and direction to the team while multi-tasking and prioritizing competing requirements.

  • Capability to interface on an interdepartmental level and be an agent of change for process and procedural improvements.

  • Mastery of broad data science and engineering techniques and the tools required to design and develop products with a full understanding of industry practices and procedures.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to build effective working relationships is a must, especially across government, industry and academic organizations.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proven ability to communicate well with peers and different levels of management and the customer.

  • Proven leader who motivates, inspires, and teaches others.

  • Strong work ethic and self-motivation.

  • Analytical and demonstrated problem solving skills.

  • Must exhibit leadership for executing practical application of engineering processes on a development program and maintaining engineering rigor while balancing cost, technical, and schedule.

  • Be a resident of Indiana, with the ability to travel to Purdue University regularly.  Hybrid remote arrangements or West Lafayette office spaces are available depending on work environment preferences.

 

Desired:

  • MS/PhD graduate-level research experience in artificial intelligence or autonomy.

  • Current eligibility for a U.S. secret security clearance.

  • Experience with maritime systems and naval operations.

  • Experience with Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and Counter-UAS systems.

  • Experience with EO/IR PTZ camera, passive and active radar system sensor software integration.

  • Cross-Domain experience in both machine learning and RF technologies.

  • Experience with robot operating system (ROS) or other autonomy middleware.

  • Interest in data fusion, classical and modern control systems, and self-healing autonomy research.

  • Experience with ROS/Gazebo, Unity, or Unreal simulation software.

  • Prior experience working with DARPA or other DoD research laboratories.

  • Experience working with universities on government research contracts.

  • A strong understanding of project planning including risk and opportunity management is desirable.

  • An ability to operate as an engineering point of contact for the PMO, Senior Leadership and Customer.

  • Strong technical leadership and demonstrated ability to successfully lead a new research and development effort, including experience leading teams of senior researchers and engineers.

  • Previous costing experience on proposals.

  • System integration and test experience.

  • Military or DoD experience, especially with unmanned systems.
