Bachelor Thesis, 15 HP: Porting of Passive Radar function to new hardware

Stockholm - Järfälla, Sweden
Closing date: 15 January 2024

Radar is a proven way to localize and track airplanes and boats. A drawback is that the use of it can be detected ant that the radar can be positioned. By using the energy in for example TV or radio broadcasts it is possible to localize and track things without anyone knowing it is being done.

Your role

Background

Software Defined Radio (SDR) is a system where the signal processing is performed on general purpose processors instead of special purpose hardware. There exist several commercial hardware products to realize this, performing frequency mixing and analog to digital conversion. Saab Surveillance have been testing the KrakenSDR to detect and localize moving targets using Passive Coherent Location (PCL). A PCL system uses reflections from opportunistic transmitters, such as FM radio, TV transmitters and cellular towers to detect objects, similar to how a conventional radar works.

Description of the master thesis

The code for performing the PCL algorithm is specific for the KrakenSDR. To add the flexibility to use other SDR hardware, this code need to be generalized/ported. Your task would be to port this code to another SDR. You will have access to both the KrakenSDR and the other target SDR, and the ability to test this with an experimental setup.

Your profile

The work is for one to two engineering students that have experience with programming in python. It is also beneficial to be familiar with MATLAB and signal processing.

The scope suitable for you who is about to finish your bachelors education and is starting your 15 HP bachelors thesis.
