Examensarbete, 30 hp: Flight Mechanical Conceptual Design Criteria

Linköping,
Sweden
Closing date: 31 January 2025

This is a cluster ad for a Master Thesis project suited M.Sc. students, aimed at investigating and implementing flight mechanical criteria to be adopted in the aircraft conceptual design phase.

Your role

Background

The conceptual design phase is based on the exploration of possible aircraft configurations. Estimation and correct representation of flight mechanical properties is important to increase thrustworthyness of the analysis.

The Conceptual Aircraft Design division focuses on overall aircraft design and analysis to support both novel clean-sheat and derivative aircraft develpment programs.  At Conceptual Aircraft Design we are continuosly working on improving our methods and tools.

Description of the master thesis:

We recently acquired a new tool for modelling and analysis of aircraft concepts and are now interested in taking a further step towards developing the tool’s capabilities, in particular with respect to:

  • Static and dynamic stability modes
  • Static stability and control considerations
  • Static longitudinal, lateral and directional stability and control
  • Control surface sizing criteria
  • Stability and control strategies for tailless configurations
  • Stability and control strategies for flying-wing configurations

The project will entail three main tasks. A theoretical work to find, test and compare different models available from the literature; to implement chosen models into the modelling tool used at Saab; and to integrate the conceptual tool with aerodynamic computational analysis. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the tool Supplier of the tool to ensure correct implementation strategies.

Your profile

The Master thesis is suitable for students with interest and background in aircraft/aerospace engineering. Depending on the number of apllicants the project can be split into two parallel tasks to carry out in coordination. Since implementation of methods is an important part of the project, programming skills are a merit, in particular in C#.
