The role

As part of our Underwater group, the Hardware Design Engineer will mainly focus on designing and drafting CAD models as related to submarines. This will involve detailed designs of control cabinets, electrical systems junction and control boxes for electrical equipment. This will be completed mainly using CAD tools for mechanical designs as well as CREO in combination with Windchill, and for electrical designs ePlan P8. Other software tools are available as well.  

This design work will be undertaken cross-functionally with adjacent engineering teams and engineering expertise (systems/mechanical/electrical engineers, submarine compartment managers and production personnel). These projects are in close collaboration with domestic and international teams.

Further, the successful candidate will:

  • Involvement in all phases of product development from gathering and understanding system level requirements, through to preliminary/detailed design and production support for new products, systems and supporting assemblies and equipment
  • Ensure that outputs meet all customer needs as well as meeting company requirements in terms of schedule/cost, safety and quality
  • Safeguard the integrity of applicable processes by following the defined technical processes and, where applicable, suggesting process innovation and improvements
  • Ensuring all applicable standards and QA procedures are followed to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Comply with legislation and Company policies, processes and instructions, including those relating to non-discrimination, safety and duty of care and the quality management system
  • Manage own performance when undertaking design/drafting activities with regards to meeting the assigned project requirements

Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home will be considered for this role.

About you

Your skills and experience will include:

  • Proficiency in the use of CAD tools (preferably CREO version 7 or later and Whindchill) for mechanical design and drafting
  • Demonstrated competency in designing and developing ruggedized hardware for electrical systems
  • Demonstrated experience with design for manufacturing and production support (workshop/purchasing)
  • Knowledge in applicable ISO standards
  • Experience working within a team environment

A Defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants must be Australian citizens and eligible to obtain and maintain an NV1 clearance.
