The role

As part of our Chief Engineer group, the Head of Discipline (Hardware Engineering) will be responsible for People, Processes & Methods and Practice across the Chief Engineer Systems Engineering Group and other Hardware Engineering teams across Saab Australia (specifically with a focus on electrical engineering activities). This role would entail understanding Saab Australia’s overall organisational Hardware engineering resource requirements, identifying the future competency needs of the business and assist in putting these competencies in place.

Further, the successful candidate will:

  • Support the Chief Engineer (CE) in ensuring adherence to Saab Australia’s  Engineering Policy and work as part of a team to ensure the engineering capability is fit for purpose and meets the respective State based legislative requirements
  • Assist in the transition of business goals into required technical competencies within the discipline area and monitoring resource forward forecasts to ensure gaps are filled
  • Assist in the recruitment, development  and placement of staff within the Hardware discipline area to satisfy required competencies
  • Maintain the relevant discipline competency framework and coordinate (prioritisation and facilitation) completion of competency assessments within the discipline
  • Define and maintain the core process and methods for application within the discipline area and provide guidance on the application and tailoring by projects
  • Provide direct supervision and/or governance over the application of discipline related activities including guiding, reviewing and approving discipline related plans and process assets for use in projects, tenders and other business activities
  • Coaching and mentoring within the discipline area with an emphasis on succession planning, including supporting and guiding others through the process of becoming a Chartered/Recognised Professional Engineer

Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office, 9 day fortnight and part time (0.8 FTE minimum) will be considered for this role.

About you

Your skills and experience will include:

  • A 4 year Electrical/Electronic degree
  • Acknowledged expert in the relevant discipline with recognized broad-based experience
  • Sufficiently skilled and experienced to meet the skills and competence requirements of the relevant Australian professional certification body and/or specific State based legislation requirements for Registered Professional Engineers (currently Queensland and Victoria)
  • An understanding of the full systems and/or hardware engineering lifecycle and common guiding standards
  • Experience in large scale projects involving multi-disciplinary engineering teams and execution of discipline related activities
  • Significant supervisory experience including the conduct of performance reviews

A Defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants must be Australian citizens and eligible to obtain and maintain an NV1 clearance.
