Adaptive illuminations with deep reinforcement learning


An old type radar directs its energy by moving the antenna mechanically. A modern array antenna on the other hand is steered electronically. This enables change of direction without any inertia. The task of the radar is surveillance. It breaks down into a balance of two tasks, searching for new targets and to keeping track of known targets. This balance is delicate and the topic of this thesis project.

Description of the master thesis

This project concerns using a perceived target scene as input to a policy modeled by a deep neural network and trained by for instance Proximal Policy Optimization. The policy shall decide whether to search or track, in which direction to illuminate and how long time to illuminate. For the task there is a simulator, developed at Saab and partly by a master student who is assigned the project. We seek an other master student to work together with him.

Your profile

You are in the end of your technical master education in Engineering Physics, Engineering Mathematics, Computer Engineering or similar. Preferably, you have taken a course in deep machine learning. You have either practical experience with deep learning and reinforcement learning or you have a strong theoretical background.

This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
