High speed, low latency secure networking with P4
Comparing proprietary networking solutions to standard TCP/IP with regards to bandwidth, latency and security in radar systems.
Signal and data processing in radar systems have traditionally mainly been focusing on extracting relevant data and discarding everything else. With the advent of modern ML and DL solutions, it has become important to use as much of the data as possible. This puts new demands on our networking infrastructure, as we now need to manage many gigabytes of data per second with very low latency while at the same time maintaining a high level of security. P4 is a domain specific programming language for creating custom networking solutions and we want to explore the possibility to write custom protocols deep into the OSI stack to achieve better networking performance.
Description of the master thesis
Using P4 and hardware that is capable of running P4 developed code we want to explore the following:
Reducing overhead to maximize data transmitted per second
Minimizing latency in switches
Traffic management and custom security protocols
Minimizing latency in media hops (fiber to copper and vice versa)
Compression of noisy data to further increase bandwidth
The work will include building a testbed using P4 enabled hardware, writing specialized commuications stacks using P4 and benchmarking the solutions against standard implementations. Stretch goals is to look at hardware based compression of noisy data to increase bandwidth even further while maintaining low latency.
We are looking for 2 master degree students with an interest in:
Networking, P4, low level programming
You are at the end of your master’s degree in Computer engineering, Electrical engineering, or equivalent, and is eligble for your 30 HP degree project.
This position requires that you will be approved in a security screening in accordance with the Swedish Protective Security Act.

X Innovation Lab is a group working with new technology and new ways of working within Saab Radar Solutions in Gothenburg. We do research and create prototypes that are then used in the on-going development of Saab’s products.
