A new generation of military radar systems has entered the market in the last decade as new semiconductor technologies have enabled design of compact, high performing AESA systems. The circuits in these systems need to be protected from the system environment, and this thesis work investigates alternative solutions.


You are in your final year of your Master Studies and about to start your Master Thesis project. You have an interest in microwave technology and have taken courses in microwave engineering, radar engineering or similar. 

Description of the master thesis

The performance of a GaN MMIC is affected by the operating conditions, e.g. temperature and humidity. The problem with humidity can be solved by hermetic packaging, but this is expensive as well as a very bulky solution and hence not compatible with compact solutions for digital AESA systems. Alternative solutions are e.g. the use of on-chip protection (die-coat or BCB) that to some extent offer humidity protection, but are not equivalent to hermetic packaging. To allow future compact digital AESA systems, better knowledge about the limitations with these alternative protection solutions is needed.

Specific tasks

  • Design and fabrication of a measurement fixture for use in a climate chamber that allows measurements (DC and RF) as well as temperature monitoring of at least one bare die GaN device.

  • Design and fabrication of PCB for use with measurement fixture

  • Evaluate DC and RF performance of samples with and without BCB protection

  • Versus temperature

  • Versus humidity

  • Extra if time allows: Add melting alloy on top to study impact of on-chip two phase cooling

Your profile

This master thesis project is suitable for one to two students with interest in state-of-the-art radar technology, MMIC, design and simulation, practical testing and validation, reliability, thermal management, and problem solving. 

You are looking for a thesis project that will combine theoretical studies with hands-on engineering. The thesis project will give you an idea of what it is like to work in R&D and the challenges that are faced when designing complex systems.

This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
