Master thesis 30hp: Efficient and Adaptive Power Amplifiers for RADARs

High performing surveillance system are critical for our safety, and are hence very valuable assets. The main radar of an airborne early warning system is made up of hundreds of transmitters and antenna elements that all need to perform in a reliable and efficient way. The transmit antenna beam from the radar is formed by combining the signals from the transmitters/antenna elements with a specific phase which makes it possible to scan the beam electrically. The coupling between the antenna elements, in combination with the electrical beam scanning, changes the input impedance to the antenna elements depending on the beam scan and element position. This might give high reflection towards the antenna elements, which changes the efficiency of the transmitters. For this, you typically have a circulator at the output of the transmitter for protecting towards potentially high reflection due to antenna coupling.

The aim with this work is to develop a new power amplifier topology with adaptive compensation that does not need the bulky circulator even in presence of strong antenna coupling. The work involves a literature survey of the field, measurements of state of the art amplifiers, as well as measurements or simulations of large array antennas. Based on the evaluation, new design consideration should be proposed and implemented.

Your profile

The project is suitable for two students with background in microwave electronics, and/or antenna engineering. Experience in working in a microwave lab is meritorious.

This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
