Master Thesis 30HP: How to design grounding systems for future naval vessels

With new electronic weapons on naval vessels there is a need for new grounding systems on steel and composite naval vessels.

Background

Naval ships have today a grounding system that is separated from the transformers neutral conductor. The weapon systems contains capacitors that are connected to ground which give gives grounding problem. The normal way to solve this to introduce UPS, batteries etc. to obtain stability. Those solutions are not suitable in an efficient way needs to be replaced with new technology that fulfills applicable regulations for shipping..

Description of the master thesis

This Master Thesis aims at looking into the needs of new weapon systems that will be used on naval vessels regarding grounding. This analysis shall be used to give guidance how design grounding systems to reduce the weapons current and voltage harmonic impact and galvanic corrosion. The thesis shall implement a simulation model taking into account the problems with grounding systems in steel and composite vessels such as electromagnetic interference (EMI), galvanic currents etc.

Your profile

This Master Thesis is suitable for one to two students with interest in electric power engineering. You are at the end of your electrical engineering masters education and about to start your Master Thesis work for 30 HP.

This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.

What you will be a part of

The section for Electrical Systems for Surface Ships is located in Karlskrona and is a part of the area Mission System, Electrical and Automation within Design and Engineering at Saab Kockums. You will work together with a team consisting of 16 system and design engineers. Electrical Systems is responsible for the electrical systems onboard a naval surface vessel as electrical propulsion, power supply, distribution, battery systems, lightning and cables.
