Background
HPC environments have significantly increased the potential of computational analysis, greatly reducing the computation time and the size of problems that can be solved. There are many methods to solve such computational problems. In computational electromagnetics (CEM), one such method is the finite-difference time method (FDTD), which divides the computational domain into a grid of blocks. Our department has developed a software using the FDTD method, where HPC capabilities greatly improve the performance of the program. However, for large problems, there is one bottleneck remaining: meshing, the creation of the block grid.
Description of the master thesis
This Master Thesis concerns the development of an effective parallel block meshing software that scales well for usage in an allocated HPC environment. This meshing software should use a fast method to create meshes for very large geometries with several materials and store the meshes in a memory-effective fashion. Initially, a theoretical study should be performed where different algorithms are evaluated. Then follows the development of the meshing software and the evaluation of its performance.
Your profile
This Master Thesis is suitable for one student with interest in numerical simulations, meshing, parallel computing and software development. Examples of the degree studied towards include, but are not limited to, Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering and Computer Science.

What you will be a part of
The Aeronautics business area is an innovative supplier of world-class aircraft systems, advanced aerostructures, and a wide range of support solutions within civil and military aviation. The business area researches, develops, and produces military aviation systems. We are building for the future through research and studies into innovative flight systems and the further development of our products.
By joining Aeronautics, you will be a part of a diverse, collaborative and supportive organisation with an emphasis on professional growth and work-life balance. You will work in an innovative and vibrant workplace, while having the opportunity to develop a long-term, fulfilling career.
The section is responsible for the technology area Survivability, which refers to a system’s own protection in the form of tactical behaviour, signature adaptation; own emissions, battle damage resistance, CBRN protection and protection against electromagnetic weapons and lasers. Major tasks include evaluation of survivability characteristics and trade-offs against other properties, verification of survivability properties through analysis and measurement, and development of methodology and tools for analysis of survivability concepts and design of new signature materials.
