Master Thesis Multi-Purpose Electro-Hydraulic Converter for More Electrical Power

Linköping, Sweden
Closing date: 30 November 2023

In the future more electical aircraft is needed. Would you like to be part of the journey to find out how hydraulic and electrical systems can interact in the future?

Your role

Background

The aircraft of the future need more electrical power to mainly supply power consuming systems. There is also a need to make the emergency and reserve hydraulic pump more efficient in aircraft with a common pump to save weight and costs. Also, the low total efficiency of conventional hydraulic systems in an aircraft context is not acceptable due to the weight and cost of fuel.

Description of the master thesis

A common reversible electro-hydraulic converter fed from the hydraulic system can meet both of these needs. The converter enables variable speed control, power-on-demand, and new system architectures with more flexible control.

The concept is well in line with the criteria that characterize a modern supply system in aircraft with requirements for a high degree of utilization in a number of operating modes. The electro-hydraulic converter also saves on the number of system components. The central question, however, is whether an electro-hydraulic converter is the way forward in terms of weight compared to a larger main generator?

Working steps:

  • Study of existing equivalent electro-hydraulic converter in mobile hydraulics today at leading manufacturers and re-scale system weight to an aviation context.
  • Develop a system architecture
  • Develop a simulation model

Main Deliverables:

The main deliverables of the project include:

  • Final project report and presentation comprising description of project, literature review, comparative analysis of different designs and final suggestions.
  • A system architecture
  • A simulation model
