Business Unit Radar Solutions within Surveillance has around 1400 employees globally. Radar Solutions provides airborne, ground-based and naval radar solutions to the world market.

At Engineering, we have design responsibility for all levels of subsystems for our radar portfolio in areas such as microwaves and antennas, digital functions, software development, printed circuit boards, producibility, mechanical design, power electronics, cabling, computer systems etc.

We are responsible for deliveries in time at agreed cost to our projects, as well as meeting our cost targets for development and manufacturing. Engineering has around 700 employees.

The Mechanical & Cabling Design organization within Engineering is design responsible for the mechanical and cabling parts of our product portfolio. The department has around 75 employees in Gothenburg.

The thesis work will be conducted at the section of Mechanics with support from the section of Environmental Analysis. The section of Environmental Analysis is responsible for environmental engineering analysis within structural analysis, thermal analysis and material analysis.

Your future challenge

A radar system consist of several different subsystems and units that function together. A part of the units are design customized to follow a 19’’-standard, which enables them to fit into standardized racks. Although, as they may look the same on the outside, each unit is unique on the inside with varying components and placements of them. Before delivering a system to the customer, every unit has to be verified to ensure fulfillment of the set requirements, which includes tough vibration and chock requirements. Due to the varying design of the units, previous verification of units are difficult to utilize.

We would like to evaluate the design of the 19’’-units to facilitate verification in the future. The goal is to:

  • Evaluate the structure of the units.

  • Perform chock and vibration simulations and analysis of units.

  • Suggest design improvements.

  • Suggest process improvements.

Your profile

We are looking for two students studying Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, preferably within Applied Mechanics and/or Product Development. The work will include finite element analysis (FEM) so knowledge within this is a requirement. Two students working together with the thesis is recommended but not a requirement.

This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
