Master’s Thesis 30 hp: Repair methods of composite radome structures

Göteborg, Sweden
Closing date: 30 October 2023

Place of action:

Business Unit Radar Solutions within Surveillance has around 1400 employees globally. Radar Solutions provides airborne, ground-based and naval radar solutions to the world market. Business area Surveillance offers world-leading sensor technology in monitoring and decision support to protect against threats.

At Engineering, we have design responsibility for all levels of subsystems for our radar portfolio in areas such as microwaves and antennas, digital functions, software development, printed circuit boards, producibility, mechanical design, power electronics, cabling, computer systems etc. We are responsible for deliveries in time at agreed cost to our projects, as well as meeting our cost targets for development and manufacturing. Engineering has around 700 employees.

The Mechanical and Cabling Design organization within Engineering is design responsible for the mechanical and cabling parts of our product portfolio. The department has around 90 employees in Gothenburg. The thesis work will be conducted at the department of Air Borne Design with support from the section of Antenna Design and Measurement, and Environmental Analysis. The section of Environmental Analysis is responsible for environmental engineering analysis within structural analysis, thermal analysis and material analysis.

Your future challenge:

Modern sensors are placed behind structures, often designed in composite materials. These structures severe several different purposes and are therefore required to be multifunctional. The most important properties are electrical properties, structural properties and environmental protection. Many products are used in harsh environments around the world, with high demands on accessibility. Being able to repair these while maintaining performance is of great importance.

The products referred to in this project are radomes constructed as sandwich structures with high demands for radar permeability. Many repair methods and materials are based on repairs of a structural nature and are not always suitable from the perspective of other properties.

The purpose of the project is to describe repair methods that meet the requirements of multifunctional radomes. These repair methods need to be general for some typical damages, and they must be able to be performed with materials that are available around the world.

The work includes studies of materials, repair methods and structural properties of repaired radomes.

Your profile:

We are looking for two students studying mechanical engineering or equivalent, preferably within construction/design, materials engineering or structural analysis. Previous experience and knowledge in composites, composite manufacturing, mechanical design and analysis is a merit. Two students working together with the thesis is recommended but not a requirement.

This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
