The opportunity
Saab Australia is an industry participant in the Combat Systems Integration – Integrated Project Team (CSI-IPT) Collaboration Agreement (CSI-IPT CCA). The CSI-IPT CCA forms a collaborative enterprise organisation to execute scopes of work across Hobart Class Destroyer (SEA4000 Phase 6 and other related Destroyer Capability Enhancement (DCE) upgrades) and the Hunter Class Frigates (HCFs - SEA5000 Phase 1). This will see independently executed programs such as SEA4000 Phase 6 and SEA5000 Phase 1 brought under one umbrella enterprise organisation, the CSI-IPT.
The CSI-IPT will be built up with personnel from three industry participants and the Commonwealth of Australia (CoA) to form a collaborative team working across multiple programs to leverage synergies between platforms.
The role
As part of our Engineering and Sustainment Services group, the Mechanical Designer will form a part of the boarder DDG CSI Design Engineering Team. The Mechanical Designer is primarily responsible for assisting with the execution of prescribed engineering changes related to the Combat System that will be installed on the in-service Hobart Class DDG within the RAN fleet and the development of bespoke assemblies, equipment layouts, schematics and other models/drawings for programs across the DDG Program.
Further, the successful candidate will:
- Evaluate maturity and perform technical reviews of design drawings.
- Execute Mechanical Design activities including cable schedule, system drawings.
- Ensure Finite Element Analysis structural and vibrational simulation meet prescribe standards.
- Liaise across stakeholder groups to deliver design assurance and holistic system compliance.
- Provide design support to the production team during conduct of production.
- Support the execution of major program milestones such as design DDR and Production Support activity.
- Evaluate the maturity of product data provided by suppliers into the integrated design.
- Perform technical reviews of the design products and deliverables Produce a part list of components used in Assembly drawings.
- Create drawings such as Cable Block Diagram (under the direction of an Electrical Engineer) to support the program in accordance with the contracted format and standards.
Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office and a 9-day fortnight will be considered for this role.
About you
Your skills and experience will include:
- A tertiary qualification(s) in mechanical engineering.
- Understanding of the lifecycles of SME electrical/ electronic projects within the Defence environment.
- Understanding of levels of responsibility including levels of Technical Authority.
- Working within a multidisciplinary team environment with open communication to both peers and management.
- Eligibility for CPEng registration and Registered Professional Engineer QLD (RPEQ) and VIC (RPEng Vic) as a Mechanical Engineer.
- Understanding of the fundamentals of CM and Quality requirements (as required by ISO 9001).
- Designing and developing complex mission critical mechanical systems and other associated hardware.
- Selecting and integrating of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) subassemblies.
- Designing hardware components using a number of formal design methodologies and tools.
- Writing and/or reviewing hardware related documentation
- Understanding of best practice principles for hardware design, development, testing and implementation.
- ERP/PLM systems (IFS and/or Windchill preferred).
- Knowledge of technology and technology trends in the Hardware discipline.
- Knowledge and experience across hardware disciplines (Desirable).
- Knowledge of Configuration Management principles and tools relating to Hardware (Desirable).
