Saab Inc., Autonomous and Undersea Systems (AUS) division is seeking an innovative Naval Architect and/or Hydrodynamicist to join our growing team. The experience for this position may vary from 8 to 15+ years as a Naval Architect or in a related fluid analysis and system design role. Interest with and experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics is a requirement. As an AUS Naval Architect/Hydrodynamicist you will analyze system requirements, centers of buoyancy and gravity (and associated lever arms), power budgets, and iteratively design/craft/validate solutions including propulsion, vehicle hull, and control surface forms and shapes for autonomous Unmanned Surface/Underwater Vehicles (USVs, UUV/AUVs) and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs). Your insight and understanding will also guide others in the implementation of overall product design requirements. The role of Naval Architect often grows into, or also performs tasks of, a Systems Engineer. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Analyze, conceive, simulate, prototype, and validate marine USV, UUV/AUV, and ROV systems
Apply fundamentals of naval architecture/hydrodynamics to create innovative solutions.
Present and discuss technical concepts, tradeoffs, analyses, designs, and performance estimates.
Interface with Systems Engineering and other disciplines to develop/define/implement customer requirements.
Follow through on full product lifecycle: development, prototyping, integration, verification, delivery, and support as required including operations and sea-testing.
Incorporate best practices for naval architecture/hydrodynamics and Design for Cost & Manufacturability.
Identify, manage, and solve problems associated with naval architecture/hydrodynamics work products.
Apply experience and knowledge to resolve design, verification, manufacturing, and field performance issues.
Follow company standard operating procedures and Quality System requirements.
Plan, organize, and estimate required effort for responsible tasks, including possibly writing Basis of Estimates (BOEs).
Work within a team environment to achieve goals.
Support mentoring and engineering staff development.
Skills and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or related engineering discipline required, Master’s degree is a plus
8 to 15+ years of relevant experience in Naval Architecture/Hydrodynamic design with broad application and a fundamental understanding of the product development life cycle. May consider less years of experience for the right high potential candidate.
Fundamental understanding of industry accepted design methods and practices, including design spaces/tradeoffs, test data analysis, and requirement/specification change processes.
Significant product development background demonstrating a strong engineering aptitude and good problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to resolve issues during design, development, and execution of Naval Architecture activities.
Experience using Ansys CFX and Fluent, Matlab & Simulink, MS Office ( Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc. (SolidWorkds and Project are pluses)) to performance analyses, create documents, work products, and presentations.

- Experience in at-sea testing, system tuning, and verification for Naval and Marine applications.
- Familiarity with Military Standards, ruggedized equipment design, and environmental test requirements.
- Knowledge of materials and corrosion control.
- Extensive familiarity with the design and development of autonomous surface and underwater systems.
- Experience modeling and simulating surface and subsea systems.
