Principal Systems Engineer

Job Description:

Saab Inc., Land Systems division is seeking an experienced and dynamic Principal Systems Engineer with emphasis on munition and missile weapon systems, including concept developments, system architectures and requirements, various platform integration, and unmanned systems, to work in a rapid and dynamic growing division environment.

You should be results-oriented and capable of taking initiative, exhibiting technical knowledge and leadership, hands-on solving complex “system of systems” problems, multi-tasking, and providing next generation and innovative solutions. You will work closely with the project and program leadership, business development and capture teams, engineering leadership and teams across businesses and locations.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, responding to requests of information (RFI), white paper generation, proposal support, and active assistance with current programs and efforts.

Travel is required, both domestic and international. Currently the position is remote with travel; relocation may be required to the future facility's location, at this time TBD.

Responsibilities include:

  • Support the company’s and division's strategic technical and business path by implementing new technological solutions to identified capability gaps, including intellectual property retention and capture.

  • Interface with project leadership, engineering, operations, business development, program capture, supply chain, quality, finance, security, export control and other relevant functions to understand, define, develop, and decompose mission, employment and product requirements based on limited customer inputs, existing product (including commercial and off-the-shelf) availability and company strategy.

  • Allocate, decompose, and flow down typical defense and aerospace industry standards and requirements, relevant to specific efforts. Utilize existing tools to capture and update system engineering records.

  • Develop system architectures based on the balance of above requirements in alignment with schedule and budget constraints.

  • Develop system test architectures, verification, and risk reduction strategies, and identify levels of resources, in terms of personnel, materials, suppliers, and facilities, including analysis, fabrication, integration, and test.

  • Work closely with existing products’ design authorities and jointly generate the best solution for given problems, as well as communicate effectively with suppliers, customers, and teammates.

  • Plan, staff, organize and lead small teams of engineering development, integration, and demonstration, including schedule and budget planning.

  • Provide relevant education and share all aspects of missile and munition weapon systems knowledge with the team. Mentor and support engineering staff development.

  • Actively participate in proposal efforts (including whitepaper and RFI responses), technical volume generation, estimates, basis of estimates, and reviews.

  • Actively assist Land Systems Chief Engineer/Technical Director with other division efforts and act on their behalf in their absence.

Compensation Range: $154,300-$204,500

The compensation range provided is a general guideline. When extending an offer, Saab, Inc. considers factors including (but not limited to) the role and associated responsibilities, location, and market and business considerations, as well as the candidate's work experience, key skills, and education/training.

Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering and 20 years of experience in related field; or Master of Science in Engineering and 18 years of experience in related field.

  • Considerable hands-on experience with weapon systems (missiles, munitions, and platforms in land, sea, and air domains) concepts of operation, design, manufacturing, integration, test, production, and life cycle sustainment.

  • Working experience with DoD and industry engineering processes, procedures, requirements, tools, and practices.

  • Working knowledge of specifications and requirements development, decomposition, flow-down, interface definitions, requirements verification, and risk management, including working with minimum customer requirements.

  • System and subsystem integration and test planning and execution experience.

  • Engineering and engineering leadership skills through all phases of multi-discipline product cycle, including conceptualization, design, integration, verification, test, production, and sustainment.

  • Effective communications with leadership, subordinates, and peers, both domestically and internationally.

  • Self-starter, working with minimum direction.

  • Ability to obtain DoD Secret clearance (active clearance preferred).

  • International and domestic travel is required, at least 30%.


Desired Experience and Skills:

  • Experience with autonomous systems, specifically ground vehicles, both manned and unmanned.

  • Experience with mechanical engineering, propulsion, energetics, and advanced manufacturing technologies (i.e. additive manufacturing, robotic manufacturing, etc.)

  • Experience with configuration management and tools, TDP release and configuration control, change control notices, risks and opportunities management, quality control, and other supporting functions.

  • Space and/or maritime system experience with software/hardware integration experience, especially in autonomy and artificial intelligence a plus.
