Job Description:

Saab, Inc.'s Radar Surveillance division in East Syracuse, NY is seeking a Senior Staff Mechanical/Thermal Engineer. The engineer will be a member of the Mechanical Engineering team responsible for the development of mechanical, structural, thermal and electronic systems and assemblies across various ground based and shipboard military radar platforms.

  • Application of thermal and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) principles for planning and conducting thermal-fluid analysis of electronic, mechanical and electromechanical systems for transient and steady state systems and interpreting analysis results.

  • Design, analysis, selection and proposal of methods and techniques for thermal management solutions.[DP1] 

  • Develop solid models for both CFD analysis and CAD solid models of electronic and mechanical assemblies.

  • Documentation of design solutions including reports, engineering drawings and Bill of Materials.

  • Performing analysis of hardware, components, or assemblies during on-going assembly and integration activities.

  • Providing technical guidance and direction for analytical tasks and thermal testing.

  • Writing cost estimates for design and analysis activities To support proposal efforts.

  • Provide effective communication across functional teams, customers, contractors and suppliers.

  • Work as key member of a cross functional teams to develop solutions to thermal management solutions in electronics packaging.

  • Participate in industry and academic working groups focused on developing future thermal management solutions.

  • Responsible for the design, analysis, and documentation of major subsystems.

Skills and Experience:

  • Masters of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. BS may be considered.

  • 10+ years of experience in thermal analysis with experience in Finite Element modeling and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations.

  • Testing experience including creating test concepts, selecting sensors, specifying data acquisition, monitoring testing, and writing plans, procedures and reports.

  • Thermal analysis using either FEA or specialized thermal codes.

  • Candidate must be able to work with limited/general direction and must be able to communicate effectively.

  • Finite Element Stress, Dynamic, and Thermal analysis using ANSYS.

  • Analysis experience using ANSYS FLOTHERM and ICEPAK[DP2] .

  • Strong knowledge of heat transfer and fluid flow with demonstrated industry application.

  • Demonstrated industry experience with designing, testing, and troubleshooting, electronics cooling, heat exchangers, fans, pumps, piping systems, thermal control techniques or refrigeration systems.

  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills using Microsoft Office applications are a must.

  • Ability to effectively interface with functional teams, customers, contractors and suppliers.

  • Ability to evaluate vendor capabilities to provide required products or services.

  • Experience estimating size, cost and schedule for the development of thermal management solutions.

  • Must hold or be able to obtain U.S. DoD SECRET security clearance.


  • Experience with application of thermal-fluid sciences to military radar platforms.

  • Knowledge of SOLIDWORKS.

  • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).

  • Working knowledge of materials and process specifications.

  • Analysis experience using SolidWorks Flow Simulation and Electronic Module for SolidWorks Flow Simulation
