Senior Staff Safety Engineer
Saab is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Staff Safety Engineer to join our systems engineering team to support development of complex surveillance systems (primarily radar). This critical role is a key contributor to the successful completion of programs. The location of this position is flexible; the successful candidate will have the ability to either work remotely (within the Northeast region) or onsite in the East Syracuse, NY office.
Responsibilities will include:
Participate in architectural trade studies, safety modeling and budgeting, and design and requirements capture (including design attributes, material properties, and protective features).
Influence system and sub-system designs to improve functional and product safety.
Advise design engineering on the applicability of relevant codes & standards.
Recommend design or test methods to assure compliance with applicable codes & standards.
Review product changes for safety impacts and system effects.
Propose changes in design or formulation to improve system functional safety or product safety.
Create and maintain safety-related documentation for products and contracts.
Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of system level requirements for assigned systems and the design features that satisfy these requirements.
Maintain the documentation baselines for each system variant.
Analyze system data to determine adequate system performance under various environmental and operational conditions.
Investigate system anomalies and recommend actions to resolve these anomalies.
Provide identification, assessment, and resolution of risks during program planning and execution.
Work with Technical Leads to ensure technical, cost, and schedule performance is achieved.
Work within cross-functional teams that include systems, software, electrical, mechanical, test, logistics, and production engineers.
Provide mentoring and guidance to junior engineers in the organization.
Support technical and cost proposal preparation for future programs.
Collaborate across the functional organizations within Saab in the U.S. and across the global corporation.
Skills and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related discipline.
10+ years of relevant experience in safety critical or mission critical industries (aerospace, defense/military, medical, automotive, energy / nuclear, etc.).
Familiar with safety analysis methods such as functional hazard analysis, failure modes and effects analysis, and fault tree analysis.
Practiced in MIL-STD-882 system safety practices.
Familiar with MIL-STD-1472 human engineering standards.
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build effective working relationships in team environment.
Strong written and oral communication skills, and proven ability to communicate well with peers, various levels of management, and customers.
Strong work ethic and self-motivation.
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
Must hold or be able to obtain U.S. DoD SECRET security clearance.
Master’s or PhD degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related discipline.
Experience developing, deploying, or supporting complex RF/Microwave systems for ground based, shipboard, and airborne systems.
Experience with Systems Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) methods for safety and security analysis and control.
Familiar with AR4761, ISO 26262, or IEEE 1633 safety assurance standards.
Familiar with system security analysis.
Experience with Agile development approach.
Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) in MagicDraw/Cameo or similar.
INCOSE CSEP or ESEP Certification.
Experience working with US Department of Defense (DoD) customers and the DoD procurement/acquisition environment.
