Senior Systems Engineer- Virtual Ramp Control

Job Description:

Saab, Inc. in East Syracuse, NY is currently seeking a self-motivated Senior Systems Engineer to deploy state-of-the-art Remote Tower solutions for Airport Ramp Operation applications in the U.S. As a Systems Engineer, you will interpret customer and market input, map customer requirements to product specifications, identify requirements, capability gaps and needed enhancements. You will define system architectures, support builds, integration and test, and participate in the deployment, optimization and support of the Remote Tower system in the field. The system consists of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hardware, software and firmware components and may incorporate a wide range of integrated technologies: human interface design, Multilateration, radar, ADS-B, GPS, IP networking, video tracking and fusion, and integrating external analog or digital inputs.

The successful candidate will have proven engineering experience that will be applied to Remote Tower programs in the U.S. and will likely be extended to other technologies as appropriate. This role is focused on U.S. based programs, however Saab is a global company and the Product Development team is based in Sweden; significant interaction with Saab personnel located abroad is routine.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Work independently on routine tasks and with moderate guidance on new or complex tasks.

  • Collaborate with, and work under the direct supervision of other engineers as appropriate based on the level of expertise and complexity of the task.

  • Apply knowledge and skills to interpret customer requirements and map them to product requirements.

  • Identify gaps in product capabilities.

  • Identify and propose methods to mitigate technical risk.

  • Assist in the design and documentation of the system configuration in accordance with the Saab and customer design standards.

  • Develop integration plans.

  • Assist with the assembly, integration, and Factory Acceptance Test events.

  • Assist with the deployment and optimization of the system, resolving technical issues as appropriate.

  • Assist with the Site Acceptance Test.

  • Assist with training of the customer as appropriate.

  • Support the system after deployment.

  • Collaborate and communicate effectively both written and verbally.

  • Interface with both U.S. and Sweden based Remote Tower program and product teams to resolve specific technical topics.

  • Interface with the Remote Tower customers as required.

  • Use problem solving skills to provide innovative and practical solutions.

  • Produce high quality program documentation.

  • Perform trade studies.

  • Understand and work within contractual constraints.

Compensation Range: $108,000-$137,700

The compensation range provided is a general guideline. When extending an offer, Saab, Inc. considers factors including (but not limited to) the role and associated responsibilities, location, and market and business considerations, as well as the candidate's work experience, key skills, and education/training.

Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer or Industrial Engineering or applicable scientific field.

  • 8+ years of applicable, professional experience, preferably in the domain of air traffic control, airline ramp control or airport surveillance.

  • Ability to develop system architectures and configurations that meet customer needs.

  • Ability to specify interfaces including physical characteristics, electrical characteristics and communication protocols.

  • Ability to perform basic data analysis.

  • Ability to perform trade studies.

  • Experience with Microsoft office including Word, Excel, Visio and Power Point are required.

  • Experience with Microsoft Project is desirable.

  • Familiarity with integration and test techniques.

  • Familiarity with networking, router and switch configuration and basic network design.

  • Understanding of mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.

  • Experience with optical sensor technologies is highly desirable.

  • Experience with MATLAB, and 2D/3D CAD (Autodesk Fusion, Solidworks, etc) is desirable.

  • The ability to support all phases of programs from concept development through final acceptance is required. This will often include on-site support for surveys, installation, configuration, integration, optimization and acceptance testing.

  • Good interpersonal and communications skills are essential in this role.
