Systems Technician

Saab Deutschland GmbH are looking for an energetic and motivated team player to join our team supporting the British Army in Paderborn, Germany as a Communications and Information Systems Technicians.

This Saab facility provides the technical and logistical support to a wide range of laser based training equipment (DFWES) used by The British Army. Although predominantly based in the warehouse facility in Paderborn, the job offers the opportunity of some travel to support other Saab sites and British Army exercises.

Our team in Paderborn is expanding from 2 to 5 employees.

We are responsible for maintaining, issuing and receipting the British Army’s DFWES simulation equipment. As part of the team you will be responsible for the Communications system which the DFWES equipment transmits over. You will learn to erect masts and set up the communications between the various masts and the Exercise control (Excon).

You will learn by on the job training and possibly courses in Sweden and UK how to set up and maintain the systems. There is an element of travel involved as we support the Army on exercises everywhere they use the equipment.

Occasionally the opportunity arises to work with other NATO partners who use the same simulation equipment. We do not work shifts but when we support exercises, we may have to work extended hours.

Outside of exercise periods you will be responsible for the maintenance of the equipment.

The job specification includes:

  • Assist in planning and preparation of CSS/Excon equipment (packing, system configuration, testing).
  • Issue and receipt of CSS/Excon equipment.
  • Corrective and preventative maintenance of CSS/Excon equipment including configuration control, software upgrades and database management.
  • Technical troubleshooting including helpdesk support to field teams
  • Telescopic mast work and maintenance.
  • Occasional in-field technical support of exercises to include set-up/tear down of CSS and Excon and through-exercise system monitoring and trouble shooting.
  • Instructing equipment use.
  • Requirement for occasional extended working hours (including some weekend work).


  • Good communication skills with the ability to interact with military and civilian staff.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Maths and English academic qualifications (GCSE A-C grade or equivalent).
  • GCSE/BTEC or equivalent in ICT.
  • Experience within IT showing a good understanding of Windows OS, Microsoft products and networking.
  • Willingness to work in a military environment.


  • Forklift operating license.
  • Previous mast work experience.
  • Qualified to drive with a trailer.

This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
