Vice President and General Manager, Surveillance Systems

Job Description:

Saab Inc. is currently seeking a Vice President and General Manager– Surveillance Systems to lead and manage its portfolio of radar, air traffic management, electronic warfare and command and control products and operations within the US market. This position will be located in Syracuse, NY and will lead, develop, and manage the overall strategy and P&L execution of an approximately $250 MUSD Aerospace, Defense, and Civil Aviation business.

Job Description:

The Saab VP, GM – Surveillance Systems is the executive responsible for the growth and management of Saab’s Surveillance Systems portfolio in the US market.  The candidate will develop and execute Saab’s US Surveillance business strategy in partnership with the relevant global business areas and the rest of the Saab Inc. leadership team. In addition, the VP, GM Surveillance Systems will manage a workforce of over 300+ employees in executing this work. Saab AB operates a global management matrix organization where the country unit executive has delegated responsibility from the relevant global Business Area for the growth and P&L execution of the country business within the area of responsibility. 

The ideal candidate has significant organizational leadership experience, very strong communication skills, a demonstrated track record of successful new business marketing and sales, and the ability to strategically manage market and business risks as a member of the U.S. senior leadership team. 

Saab’s global matrix management model requires the successful candidate to have the ability to lead and operate a large organization in an international cross cultural environment.  Frequent international travel is required.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Define and implement repeatable, saleable, and predictable ways of working, standard operating procedures, and practices for the Division, in accordance with corporate policies and procedures in the U.S. and Sweden to ensure proactive predictability of performance across Surveillance Systems operations.

  • Lead and recruit a team of highly skilled and motivated managers and employees.

  • Lead the development, implementation, and management of an integrated market growth strategy and the associated marketing and sales activities for the division.

  • Manage the financial performance of the Surveillance Systems organization in support of the global Business Area objectives.

  • Develop and implement an integrated high-performance culture that consistently strives to set the standard across the company.

  • Develop and maintain a strong process for technology transfer across the assigned portfolio supported by a clear and deep understanding of evolving market trends and specific opportunities.

  • Effectively serve as the senior executive point of contact for Business Area Surveillance in the US market while developing and managing relevant senior level internal and external stakeholder relationships

  • Effectively represent Saab in local political, community, and industrial engagements.


Total Annual Compensation Opportunity: $300,000-$600,000

The compensation range provided is a general guideline. When extending an offer, Saab, Inc. considers factors including (but not limited to) the role and associated responsibilities, location, and market and business considerations, as well as the candidate's work experience, key skills, and education/training.

Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering or related discipline is required. MBA/ Master's degree desirable.

  • 20+ years of progressive leadership experience with proven track record of success in leading industry or DoD mid to large functional and/or business level organizations.

  • People management; challenges employees to be extraordinary, embraces ambiguity and complexity, and utilizes coaching as a way to grow and improve employee capabilities

  • Ability and passion to drive an international, complex, high-tech organization

  • Effectively communicate the expectation levels and vision of the organization in a way to motivate and encourage staff to achieve high performance and generate growth

  • Ability to establish and maintain a strong network of customers, local industrial partners and other relevant sources of information and influence

  • Prior U.S. Military experience and a strong, relevant customer network is highly desired.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and grow business from an approx.  $250 MUSD base in relevant U.S. Defense and Civil Aviation markets.

  • Strong proficiency in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Cognitive sensing at the both the sensor and network levels is highly desirable.
