Creating sustainable solutions

An important part of Saab’s work to reduce its environmental impact is research and development collaborations aimed at creating sustainable solutions. Through new, resource-efficient technology, we can help to reduce environmental impacts, which is necessary in order to protect the environment and to compete in a global market.

Environmental strategy

Our environmental strategy focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, resource efficiency and phasing out hazardous substances. Saab’s environmental goals is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its operations by 33 per cent by 2030 (compared to 2017), increase resource efficiency from circular flows and to minimize hazardous substances by phasing many of them out of our products. We report our impact such as carbon emissions according to the Green House Gas (GHG) protocol and disclose our climate risks and measures to CDP where our report can be found. Saab has obtained a top rating of A- for our most recent (2019) CDP report.

In most cases customers address and require a much tougher set of environmental requirements in addition to environmental laws and regulations on products and services. To meet and manage these environmental requirements, Saab has introduced methodologies and working methods that are integrated into management system and in the Saab organisation.

Our climate goal: 33% less greenhouse gas emissions by 2030

Climate impact portfolio

Saab's broad product portfolio contains products and services which reduce environmental impact. Examples of such solutions are departure assist systems implemented at many of the world’s busiest airports, underwater hull cleaning of ships to reduce drag increasing fuel efficiency, involvement in projects for sustainable underground mining and for creating cement with microwave technology, all of which can and in many cases already do reduce emissions from our customers operations.

The low lifecycle cost of our products is many times associated with a lower than average climate impact and a way of designing our products that we have been accustomed to since the early days of our company. We also participate in several research and development partnerships to create sustainable solutions for the future. One example is CleanSky, where Saab is one of the main suppliers to Europe’s largest research programme dedicated to reducing aircraft emissions.

Saab's climate fund

In 2019, Saab established a climate fund to further encourage the development of environmentally sustainable innovations and thereby help to reduce climate impact. Every flight booked for business travel, generates a sum to the fund. The fund is used to develop environmentally sustainable innovations ranging from improving existing products to developing completely new product ideas geared towards reducing climate impact.

What we do to reduce our impact on the climate

Below are some further examples of our strategies to reduce our impact on the climate from every day operations:

  • Optimise use of energy, heat and cooling at our production and test facilities
  • Use of non-fossil fuels for heating and operation of facilities
  • Minimize use of fossil fuels for passenger and freight transport
  • Target to phase out fossil-only vehicles from business travel by car
  • Detailed follow up of our business travel with the use of our own Travel Carbon Tool
  • Facilitate travel free meetings from the use of digital tools, including AR/VR

What we do to minimise our overall environmental footprint

We aim to create circular flows through increased recycling from production and to reduce the environmental footprint from our products by:

  • minimizing waste
  • Use water responsibly at our production and test facilities
  • Support development of sustainable products and innovations
  • Identify and phase out hazardous substances that pose unacceptable risks
  • Analyse requirements in collaboration with suppliers and customers to implement new technologies to replace hazardous substances and materials

By working systematically to reduce CO2 emissions from our own operations and by developing sustainable innovations Saab contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal number 13: Climate action. Read more here
