Safer, more efficient ports for South Australia

Defence and security company Saab deploys common operating picture technology to improve operations across seven South Australian ports.

The common operating picture gives all port users an easy-to-read map-based view of their port. It sorts information in layers so users only see data relevant to their area of responsibility.

Management get the high-level overview whilst operations staff execute routine tasks through the user interface.

From a security and safety perspective, responding to incidents can be coordinated quickly as data can be viewed in real-time by all parties through one common view.

The common operating picture combines the latest developments in GIS (geographical information system) technology with sophisticated KleinPort data to create its port overview interface.

Data, including detailed cargo information, vessel locations, vessel visit details, AIS transponder data, and emergency response vessel locations are just some examples of what can be shared and dynamically updated in the common operating picture.

This new technology upgrades the existing Saab KleinPort port management information system used by Flinders Ports for managing and tracking vessels, property, and cargo as well as administration functions across the seven different ports it manages.

Flinders Ports uses KleinMobile, Saab’s mobile pilot application, to communicate pilot orders and receive completed job reports.

"The common operating picture gives us a seamless view of both land and sea operations. The technology’s in-built efficiencies have already boosted productivity and support our safety focus", says Captain Carl Kavina, General Manager, Marine Operations, Flinders Ports.

Flinders Ports, South Australia’s leading port operator, has been a KleinPort customer since 2004. It operates seven South Australian ports and owns and operates the Port Adelaide container terminal.

The KleinPort Common Operating Picture is a product of the Maritime Traffic Management product area within Saab business area Surveillance, a leading provider of Maritime Enterprise Software.
