The operator combat console provides a clear and distinct presentation of the tactical and operational environment, and optimises the operators’ ability to process complex cognitive decisions in an instant. Its characteristics combine to reduce operator mental load and fatigue, and enable increased reaction times, saving valuable seconds in critical situations.

“The Future Operator Workspace is another example of Saab leveraging its world class expertise and partnering with Australian industry to design and develop innovative new products which can be integrated into the global supply chain,” said Saab Australia Managing Director, Andy Keough CSC.

“A global collaboration leveraging extensive R&D, this complete evolution of the naval operator combat console was conceptualised, developed and manufactured in only eight months – working with leading industrial design academia at the University of South Australia and Adelaide manufacturing specialists Mitchell & Cheesman. This is another example of our commitment to strengthening sovereign capability and workshare for local defence industry.”

The Future Operator Workspace seamlessly integrates human-centred design and ergonomics, with a sophisticated user-machine interface. The innovation and technology employed in the system, enables an increased tactical advantage under even the most extreme conditions – significantly enhancing operator effectiveness and survivability for naval operators.

The platform is highly functional and customisable, it possesses a smaller footprint, without operational compromise, and employs Saab’s bespoke combat management 9LV software with advanced functionality and new ways of interaction.

Leveraging decades of global experience designing, manufacturing and integrating combat consoles, Saab has developed a strong Australian capability. Working closely with industry partners, including SAGE Automation, Saab’s locally designed and manufactured Multi-Function Consoles are supplied to the Royal Australian Navy and exported to defence forces around the world.

First revealed at DSEI 2023, the Future Operator Workspace will be on display in Sydney at Indo Pacific, as part of Saab’s exhibition stand 4B1 in Hall 3, where visitors will be able to experience the Future Operator Workspace for themselves.
