Saab holds conference for future suppliers to its aerostructure plant
Saab held a conference for suppliers at its Saab Aeronáutica Montagens (SAM) facility in Sao Bernardo do Campo on May 10, 2018, to look at potential suppliers in the region.
Marcelo Lima, Director-General of SAM, presented the plans for the plant, the contracting and assembly stages and the aeronautical segments that will be produced there, such as tail cones, aerodynamic brakes, wingboxes, and front and rear fuselage for the single-seat and two-seat versions. Representatives of the companies had a chance to get a close look at a full-size replica of the Gripen fighter.
"The event today exceeded our expectations. We got to meet highly qualified companies that can meet our future needs," said Roberto Serra, supply manager at SAM.
More than 50 companies from diverse business areas met with the Saab team so to present their services and help Saab in structuring its future portfolio of suppliers that can work with SAM when operations begin.
The main goal for this first contact with local companies was achieved and will help Saab find the right suppliers for the next stages of SAM's development.
"In this recruitment process we opened SAM's doors to the local community. We have a lot of interest in linking up with the region and continuing contributions with our in-depth knowledge of defence technology," says Marcelo Lima.
The services range from information technology to more complex areas, such as plant rollout. This business will drive the local economy directly and indirectly.
Saab also presented details about the Brazilian Gripen Programme to the visiting companies. The acquisition of 36 jet fighters by the Brazilian Air Force is a huge technological leap for Brazilian industry through an extensive technology transfer programme that will allow supersonic aircraft to be developed, produced and maintained here in Brazil.
