Achieving Optimal Decision-Making with Gripen’s HMI
Saab has always been incorporative of new and efficient technological advances in the products and solutions that they deliver. One such technological incorporation has been the Human Machine Interface (HMI), which is the result of AI technology, on the multirole aircraft Gripen. Episode 5, Season 3 of True Collaboration talks about some of the advantages of the Gripen, owing to its excellent HMI feature.
The HMI on Gripen has been developed to reduce the pilot’s workload and allow the fighter to work autonomously. Over the years, the HMI has been developed and designed to be as user friendly as possible. The most important aspect of the HMI is the decision support it provides the pilot with, which facilitates and speeds up the pilot's decision-making process in a complex mission.
“The major advantage of Gripen is its ability to fuse information from its various sensors before presenting it to the pilot. This way, the pilot receives filtered information, which facilitates his decision-making while decreasing his workload in the cockpit,” Lte Col Av Maurício Côrte Real, Manager of the Fox Group, Brazilian Air Force.
The Wide Area Display (WAD) in the Gripen cockpit puts together all the data and information and displays them to the pilot using clever association and fusion algorithms. This helps the pilot to have a clear picture of his surrounding and helps him understand the course of actions that need to be taken in any situation. The ease that comes with it helps the pilot to focus more on the mission.
“The pilot's situational awareness becomes much more effective, helping him to make the best decision when using his weapons and carrying out his mission. It's a pilot's aircraft: everything is designed around the aircraft to be centred around the pilot,” says Jonas Jakobsson, Test Pilot, Saab.
