Gripen Aggressor: Train As You Fight

2 min read

When it comes to training for advanced combat tactics, modern day pilots need an advanced fighter with all the new-age features they should learn to deal with. But how many advanced aggressors are there in the market?

The aggressor market usually uses only legacy fighter aircrafts from the 60s-70s. “These legacy fighters which are often used as aggressors, they don’t have the same performance as aircraft entering service today or in the future,” says Richard Smith, head of Gripen marketing and sales.

Saab’s Gripen Aggressor, based on the proven Gripen C-series, is the ultimate platform for the adversary air combat training market. It brings a unique mix of high performance, mission flexibility and availability combined with a low life cycle cost.

Why Gripen Aggressor?
The Gripen aggressor aircraft has been conceptualized keeping in mind the needs of modern day training. It can simulate enemy tactics, advanced techniques, and procedures to provide a realistic environment for the fighter pilots

Unlike legacy fighters which may not be up-to-mark for combat training, considering the line of modern aircrafts entering today, Gripen Aggressor has all the renowned handling and flight characteristics of a modern fighter (Gripen C), including advanced sensor and datalink capabilities.
Besides the lack of modern adversary aircraft, another major problem that the aggressor market is facing is the lack of dissimilar fighters. When two similar modern fighter aircraft go up against each other and leads to what has been termed as “negative training value.” “It’s because the pilots know all about the performance of the aircraft they are fighting against. To train against similar modern aircraft is a waste of resources,” Richard says.

With Gripen Aggressor, Saab brings a dissimilar aircraft to the training. The DNA of this aggressor is based on the C series of the fighter, which means you get a modern adversary aircraft that does not replicate the threat scenarios of your own fighter. And not only does the defending pilot receive optimum training through realistic combat scenarios, but it also works in favor for the pilot operating and flying the aggressor, as both pilots are training on latest generation aircrafts.
