India and Sweden: AI Opens New Collaboration Opportunities

2 min read

Recently, India hosted the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, one of the world's largest gatherings focused on artificial intelligence (AI). Billed as the first global AI summit to be held in the Global South, the event brought together participants from more than 110 countries and 30 international organisations.

In attendance at the summit was Sweden's largest-ever AI delegation, consisting of senior figures from industry, AI scale-ups, investors, universities, and public institutions. The group was led by Marcus Wallenberg and Tom Johnstone, with Sweden represented at the summit by Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch.

Speaking in New Delhi, Busch emphasised the strategic significance of India's leadership in AI. "It's not a coincidence that the summit is happening in Delhi, that it is India which is now taking the initiative when it comes to AI," she said. Highlighting the scope of partnerships between India and Sweden, she said, "Across many global innovation rankings, Sweden is placed among the top three. We are knowledge-hungry, always looking to partner with others who want to solve complex problems. India is definitely such a partner."

Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab, also participated in the summit, drawing attention to the increased importance of AI in the defence sector and Saab's latest capabilities in the domain.

"At Saab, we are exploring new ways of applying AI. Our systems are software-based; AI can play a critical role not only in enhancing their effectiveness but also in accelerating development cycles. Our internal innovation initiatives embrace rapid experimentation and new AI-based technologies that have the potential to reshape our industry," Micael said.

In 2025, Saab successfully completed test flights integrating Helsing's AI agent "Centaur" into a Saab JAS 39 Gripen E fighter jet, demonstrating how AI can enhance pilot decision-making and operational effectiveness. More recently, Saab partnered with Divergent Technologies to design and build what is described as the world's first software-defined aircraft fuselage, using AI-driven algorithms and additive manufacturing to reduce complexity and production time.

About his experience at the Summit, Micael said it was great, with very interesting discussions and sessions. "India's vast technology talent pool and digital ecosystem position it as an important contributor to the broader democratisation of AI. As India strengthens its focus on AI, Saab is open to working closely with Indian partners to develop and apply AI-driven capabilities," he said.
