Job Description:

Saab, Inc. is seeking a dynamic, results-oriented individual to fill the role of Plant Director. We are considering locating a factory in Grayling, Michigan where you would have an opportunity to join a team that will manufacture munitions products for DoD and international customers.  This position is eligible for Saab, Inc.’s relocation package. 

As part of the new production facility, you will be there from the start: from facility design to construction through the commencement of operations.  The Plant Director reports to the VP of Operations and is responsible for the entirety of manufacturing operations, supporting the Land Systems Division of Saab, Inc. You will be responsible for managing a team of approximately 55-70 people as well as the processes to support manufacturing operations to include production and financial controls, plant security and safety, regulatory compliance, and quality.

Additionally, as Saab looks to expand its production operations in Michigan, you will be responsible for the establishment of additional capacity in the coming years.  You will be responsible for the development and implementation of strategies to meet cost, quality, delivery, customer satisfaction, EHS, and continuous improvement goals.

More specific responsibilities include: 

  • Manage the construction effort from design through initial operating capability.

  • Attract and retain the production staff necessary to achieve strategic business objectives and operating goals. This includes management of the appropriate distribution of skills and capacity across the organization, and continuously monitoring and reconciling head counts with the operating budget.

  • Lead, inspire and engage a diverse team of employees.

  • Drive performance to reach Saab, Inc.’s revenue, EBIT and OTD goals.

  • Identifies and implements continuous improvement initiatives that enhance cost and schedule performance.

  • Assist and guide with workflows, prioritization, procedures, training, support, safety, process improvement, and quality.

  • Monitor and guide team to achieve delivery of distinctively high-quality products; to include performance, reliability, cost, and on-time delivery.

  • Establish and maintain the Manufacturing Capital Budget

Compensation Range: $138,900-$184,100

The compensation range provided is a general guideline. When extending an offer, Saab, Inc. considers factors including (but not limited to) the role and associated responsibilities, location, and market and business considerations, as well as the candidate's work experience, key skills, and education/training.

Skills and Experience:

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, operations management, or related field. Master's degree in business, engineering, or related field preferred - MBA desirable.

  • 15+ years of progressive leadership experience with proven track record of success

  • 10+ years of experience in the arms, ammunition, and explosives industry

Required Skills:

  • Munitions production experience

  • Greenfield project management experience

  • Solid understanding of 5S, Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma

  • Forecast resource requirements (people, money & assets) to meet business objectives.

  • Ability to contribute to the development of strategy and lead strategic initiatives in support of functional and business objectives.

  • Measure team and process performance through the definition and use of appropriate metrics.

  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills.

  • Willingness to travel up to 10% in support of program and business development efforts.

  • Working experience in a matrix organization.

  • Capable of obtaining a Secret level clearance.

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of DoD acquisition process and customer requirements.

  • Experience with IFS ERP System is highly desired.
