Background
The defence industry is facing increasing demand while customer needs continue to change as new threats emerge. To meet this challenge, lead-times must be reduced without compromising quality, flexibility or traceability. This creates a need to rethink how systems engineering is performed in large engineering organizations.
The thesis will focus on understanding the current requirements process, exploring modern systems modelling approaches, and assessing how changes in methodology may affect both the organization and the products being developed.
Description of the Thesis Project
As a thesis student, you will investigate how requirements are created, refined, communicated and validated across the organization. You will study how systems engineering practices support the development of complex radar systems and identify where process improvements could reduce lead-times, improve clarity and strengthen traceability.
You will also explore relevant state-of-the-art approaches such as Model-Based Systems Engineering (e.g., ARCADIA), and the use of generative AI to support engineering documentation and analysis. Based on your findings, you will propose a practical path from the current situation toward improved ways of working.
Your profile
The project is suitable for 2 students with an interest in complex systems, requirements engineering, process improvement and engineering methodology.
You are in the final stages of systems engineering, engineering physics, computer science, industrial engineering, product development or a related field, and are about to begin a 30 hp thesis project.
You have a curiosity about how large engineering organizations develop advanced technical products. We also believe that you have strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to combine technical and organizational perspectives.
