Rewarding careers for the next generation

2 min read

When the Australian Government launched the P-TECH industry-education program in June, Saab Australia teamed with local secondary school, St Patricks Technical College. StPatsTech is the first South Australian educational provider to be involved in the P-TECH program and the only one nationally to focus on defence technology education.

The P-TECH education model brings schools and industry together to encourage students to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) whilst creating new pathways into high technology jobs.

Typically Saab Australia recruits its next generation workforce as engineer graduates from software, mechatronic and electronic disciplines, but the world is changing. Fast.

Saab Australia’s people development manager Rebecca Giovine says, “We know we need to engage with and inspire students early to show them the exciting, rewarding careers our industry offers. Our collaboration with St Patrick’s through the P-TECH program certainly helps with that objective”.

StPatsTech  Principal Rob Thomas says, “Through our P-TECH partnership, our teachers are collaborating to co-deliver science, technology, engineering and mathematics projects with Saab Australia who will effectively be mentoring students towards employment”.

StPatsTech students engaged in the P-TECH program with Saab Australia can gain a Certificate IV in computer programing as part of their senior education certificate studies.

“We believe this partnership will open new opportunities for students in our local community, where they can sample real work in a professional environment, apply their learning to real outcomes and access post-school pathways which might not have been accessible to them before,” said Rebecca Giovine.

The certificate opens the door for students who choose to continue onto a science, technology, engineering and mathematics related diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree.

“We know world-class service and technological innovation is only possible with a world-class, engaged workforce and this program demonstrates we’re here to help them be their best, in supporting them every step of the way,” said Rebecca Giovine.

Saab Australia has enjoyed thirty successful years developing innovative defence and security solutions in country. We’re investing in the next generation now to safeguard Australia’s future.
