Damen-Saab Tamandaré Consortium down selected for supplying corvettes to Brazilian Navy

The consortium formed by the Dutch company Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding and Sweden's Saab are one of the three finalists that have been down selected to supply four Tamandaré Class corvettes (CCT) to Brazil. This was announced on 15 October by the Brazilian Navy. Damen is a leading shipbuilding company with more than 6,000 vessels produced and more than 20 navies serviced worldwide, and Saab has more than 80 years of experience in the defense and security industry.

"We are proud to be selected for next phase of the Tamandaré Corvette competition. We are confident that our proposal meets the needs of the Brazilian Navy", says Marianna Silva, general director of Saab do Brasil.

The consortium has selected Brazilian partners to ensure the corvettes can be built locally in Brazil. Partners include Consub, a technology solutions company specializing in the integration of naval systems, Wilson Sons Estaleiros, an integrated port and maritime logistics operator in the national market and Akaer, specialisizing in aerospace and defense markets.

"Much more than highly technological vessels, our proposal encompasses a number of benefits for the national defense industry, considering that we have included a broad transfer of technology to the country," explains Magiel Venema, commercial director of Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding.

The consortium's proposal states that Damen will supply its existing Sigma 10514 ship, which will be adapted according to the Brazilian Navy's requirements. Saab will provide the Saab 9LV Combat Management System, used by navies from several countries, known for its flexibility and easy integration of third-party modules.

Brazilian companies and technology-transfer partners will play a key role in the construction of the corvettes if the proposal is successful. For example, Wilson Sons will build the ships at its shipyard in Guarujá, São Paulo; Consub will integrate all the equipment, and Akaer will contribute with the integration of the combat systems.
