Saab to Supply KleinPilot to Great Lakes Pilotage Authority and U.S. Coast Guard
Defense and security company Saab has been awarded separate contracts from the Canadian Great Lakes Pilotage Authority and the Great Lakes Pilotage Division of the United States Coast Guard to upgrade their Great Lakes Pilot Management System to the latest version of Saab’s KleinPilot.
The new KleinPilot system will replace the existing Saab supplied system installed in 2006. It will be used by the two organizations and the three U.S. Great Lakes pilotage associations to manage and coordinate the dispatch of marine pilots on the Great Lakes and automatically generate billing in accordance with the applicable tariffs. Saab will host and administer the shared system on behalf of the two organizations on a secure site to ensure the confidentiality of the parties and data.
The KleinPilot is based on Saab’s state-of-the-art N-Tier management information system platform and will include the following new features and functionality:
- Fully web based user interface to facilitate easy user access
- Agent web portal for agents to submit pilotage requests and monitor assignment status
- Pilot web portal (and optional iPhone application) to receive assignments, record job information and submit time cards
The new system is scheduled to commence use in live production for the start of the Great Lakes navigation season in March 2017.
The Great Lakes Pilotage Authority is a Canadian federal crown corporation responsible for providing a safe and efficient pilotage service within the Great Lakes region for commercial vessels.

Pilotage within the international waters of the Great Lakes is managed by the two organizations under a memorandum of arrangements between Canada and the United States.
