Decisive firepower for dismounted forces
Ground combat remains decisive in modern conflict. Well-equipped infantry with versatile weapon systems determine outcomes when operations extend beyond initial phases, particularly in urban environments and complex terrain where technological advantages diminish. NATO forces require man-portable systems combining firepower, flexibility and operational simplicity.
Saab’s ground combat portfolio provides dismounted forces with solutions for every threat profile. The Carl-Gustaf M4 84mm recoilless rifle system engages main battle tanks, fortified positions and targets inside buildings with a wide range of programmable ammunition including HEAT, High-Explosive Dual Purpose (HEDP), High-Explosive Airburst, smoke and Anti-Structure Tandem warheads. Advanced fire -control-system compatibility ensures first-round hits even against moving targets. The Carl-Gustaf multi-role weapon adapts to mission requirements through ammunition selection rather than carrying multiple weapon systems.
The Next Generation Light Anti-tank Weapon (NLAW) provides single-soldier capability against modern main battle tanks at ranges up to 600 metres. Its unique Predicted Line of Sight guidance and Overfly Top Attack (OTA) mode enable engagement of enemy armour from any angle, with the warhead automatically attacking the vehicle's vulnerable top surfaces. Critically for urban operations, the NLAW can be fired from confined spaces including buildings from basement to second floor, and requires no specialised training – a true “fire-and-forget” system enabling rapid engagement without exposing the operator.
The AT4 family of lightweight, single-shot, fully disposable anti-armour weapons provide additional options across the lethality spectrum. The AT4CS Confined Space variant employs a saltwater countermass to allow firing from enclosed spaces, while the AT4 AST Anti-Structure Tandem warhead defeats fortified positions with selectable modes: delay, impact or breach. These systems reduce logistics burden while maintaining effectiveness against both armoured vehicles and field fortifications.
Combat-proven across multiple environments and conflicts, from Arctic cold to desert heat and dense urban terrain, where reliability is critical.
Modularity ensures long-term relevance. Weapons designed today remain effective for decades through compatible ammunition developments and fire control integration. Weight reduction increases mobility without sacrificing lethality, while compatibility with simulation and live-fire training systems enables realistic preparation from basic skills to complex tactics. Combat-proven performance across environments and conflicts – from Arctic conditions to desert heat, from open terrain to dense urban areas – demonstrates reliability when stakes are highest. As warfare evolves, ground forces equipped with Saab’s versatile, combat-proven systems retain the decisive advantage necessary for capturing and defending terrain – the ultimate measure of military success.
