Layered defence against the drone threat

The proliferation of unmanned aerial vehicles across conflict zones has transformed air defence requirements. Counter-UAS systems must detect, identify, track and neutralise threats ranging from small commercial drones to sophisticated military UAVs – often simultaneously and at acceptable cost-per-kill ratios.

Saab’s C-UAS approach integrates three essential components: advanced sensors, intelligent command and control, and layered effectors. The Giraffe 1X radar system detects targets with radar cross-sections below 0.01 square metres at tactically relevant ranges up to 75 km, providing early warning against even the smallest drones. Advanced signal processing distinguishes UAVs from birds with minimal false alarm rates, while the system’s complete 360° search volume is updated every second. Processing power and artificial intelligence enable rapid decision-making despite massive data streams from multiple simultaneous threats.

Effector options span soft-kill electronic warfare solutions to kinetic weapons optimised for different threat profiles. Saab’s LOKE system – developed in just 84 days in close cooperation with Swedish defence authorities and operationally tested on Gotland – demonstrates the company’s ability to field low-cost C-UAS missiles with 3D-printed airframes and seeker-guided warheads. Detection-to-engagement times are measured in seconds, not minutes. Mobile, scalable architectures provide protection even during relocation, while modular designs permit rapid adaptation as threats evolve.

Integration with NATO systems ensures interoperability across Alliance operations, sharing recognised air pictures and coordinating responses. Saab also provides threat-representative target drone systems for realistic C-UAS training, ensuring forces are prepared for the operational environment. Developed through accelerated innovation cycles, these solutions reflect lessons from Ukraine and prepare forces for tomorrow’s drone swarms.
