Saab Selected by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to Boost Adaptability of Defense Systems

Saab, Inc. has been awarded a research and development project from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to modernize the stability and control of surface vessels.  Partnering with Purdue University, this important project will enable system persistence in complex and dynamic environments that push them to operate outside of their planned conditions.

Current military systems, both manned and unmanned, struggle to adapt to new operating conditions that force changes in vehicle dynamics, like extreme weather or system damage.  Under such conditions, vehicles react differently than the operators expect. Machine learning systems can play a significant role in increasing the stability, reliability, safety, and persistence of vehicle operation in challenging environments. Saab, Inc. and Purdue University will integrate deep learning and classical optimal control methodologies to perceive changed operating conditions and enact new control laws in situ.

“RefleXAI is one of several technology developments toward self-healing autonomy,” said Dr. Julia Filiberti Allen, Chief Scientist in the Autonomous and Undersea Systems Division. “Our technology will enable systems to adapt in real-time to unexpected operating conditions on continuous spectra, including extreme environmental conditions like high sea states, but also those induced by humans.”

The RefleXAI project, which includes collaboration with Purdue University, will capitalize on Saab’s growing presence in West Lafayette, Indiana, leveraging its world-class aircraft manufacturing facility and engineering resources.  While RefleXAI technologies will be first prototyped on a small surface vessel, resulting technologies are broadly applicable to ground, surface, undersea, air and space platforms.
