Saab Ericsson Space delivers high-precision sensor system

Saab Ericsson Space delivers high-precision sensor system Saab Ericsson Space has delivered a "Radio Frequency Sensing" system for use on the satellite ASTRA 1 K. The system comprises a small, 400 mm diameter, stable reflector antenna and a receiver. It is used to measure the electrical pointing of the satellite with reference to the ground control station with a resolution of 1/1000 degree and accuracy, after 13 years in orbit, within 1/100 degree. The information is used to adjust the satellite pointing in particular in order to guarantee isolation between coverage areas where frequency reuse is applied. The development and verification has taken three years and the design includes several innovative solutions. The first follow on-order is for delivery in the summer 2001. ASTRA 1 K is owned and operated by Société Européenne des Satellites of Luxembourg. It will be launched later this year and is the largest commercial communications satellite ever built. Main contractor is Alcatel Space Industries, France. Saab Ericsson Space is an international supplier of space equipment.
