Saab wins order to supply vehicle electronics in South Africa
Defence and security company Saab has been awarded a contract by Denel Land Systems to develop and supply fire control computers for use on the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) New Generation Infantry Combat Vehicles (NGICV).
Denel Land Systems previously received a contract from Armaments Corporation of South Africa for the development of the NGICV for the SANDF. The development includes the manufacturing of five variants of the vehicle to be used in different roles by the South African Armed Forces. Saab South Africa has, in turn, been awarded a contract for development, integration and production of the Fire Control Computer (FCC) for use on the new vehicles. The initial phase of the contract covers development and production of a batch of engineering development units for evaluation and testing in the NGICV. Upon completion of successful testing and evaluation a number of production units are expected to be produced in a second phase. Saab’s FCC proposal is mainly built on Commercial of the Shelf (COTS) components produced in-house by Saab as well as a number of electronic cards supplied by other OEM manufacturers. Saab is responsible for overall design and integration of the components in the FCC as well as integration of the complete unit in the combat vehicles. Initial development work has already begun with final deliveries of production units expected to occur in late 2015. Furthermore Saab South Africa is committed to support Denel Land Systems/SANDF regarding maintenance and repair for the life time of the system. “By pooling our existing competence, capabilities and resources in Sweden and South Africa, we were able to win this important contract against tough competition” states Mats Pettersson, Vice President and Head of Logtronics Division at Saab Aerotech. “This is a long term strategic contract which enables Saab to further expand our support business in the land domain in South Africa as well as in cooperation with Denel Land Systems in additional markets worldwide.” Riaz Saloojee, President, Saab South Africa continues, “This contract is an excellent example of the synergies that are resulting from a bilateral cooperation and bringing direct benefits to South Africa. It is a breakthrough on the local market which further strengthens our position in the land domain. Saab continues to expand its operations and grow business in South Africa which in the long term means more jobs for South Africans and positive impact on the economy. Saab is proud to support the SANDF and South Africa.” For further information, please contact: Saab Press Centre Tel. +46 (0)734 180 018 www.saabgroup.com Saab serves the global market with world-leading products, services and solutions ranging from military defence to civil security.
