Saab awarded contract to boost Port of Melbourne's productivity

Port of Melbourne Operations Pty Ltd (PoM) has awarded Saab a contract for a web based data management and billing system for the streamlined handling of wharfage charges, channel fees and other ship related charges. Technology will include standard modules from Saab’s PortControl Port Management Information System (PMIS). PortControl will help boost productivity at PoM through inclusion or automatic reconciliation of manifests / stevedore records and its advanced billing engine.

A challenge that ports face globally is the frequent discrepancy between cargo manifests sent by ship's agents and the final tally from stevedores or terminals. Port finance teams can spend a great portion of their working days deciphering and resolving inconsistent abbreviations as well as accounting for items that are declared separately or lumped in all together when they should not be. PortControl uses Human Assisted Machine Learning to automatically resolve these cases much faster.

"We expect our solution will significantly reduce the effort for Port of Melbourne staff to maintain consistent records and to do accurate billing", says Tomas Hjelmberg, Head of Maritime Traffic Management at Saab.
