Combat Systems Engineer

The role

As part of the broader Combat System Engineering team, the Combat Systems Engineer is primarily responsible for contributing to the execution of prescribed systems engineering activities that will be applied to upgrade packages developed under Destroyer Capability Enhancement to be installed on in-service Aegis Combat System-equipped naval platforms within the RAN fleet.

Further, the successful candidate will:

  • Contribute to systems engineering activities such as requirements analysis, architecture definition and development of system and subsystem design and integration strategies and plans.
  • Provide technical support in the execution of physical integration of subsystems, development of compartment layouts, and development of ECPs.
  • Provide a high level of advice on system engineering activities to a range of stakeholders across the project.
  • Collaborate with the Systems Engineering Integration Team and Transverse Engineering disciplines such as Security Assurance, Safety, and ILS.
  • Contribute to and maintain the Systems Engineering Framework to support CS design activities such as assisting with the development and refinement of the VCRM, Assisting with the development and refinement of system functional and non- functional requirements and design artefacts.

Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office and a 9-day fortnight will be considered for this role.

About you

Your skills and experience will include:

  • Up to 2 years’ experience in systems engineering activities prior to this role.
  • Tertiary qualification(s) in a relevant discipline (mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field), and/or equivalent relevant experience (preferably within the defence industry).
  • Fundamental understanding of systems engineering principles and practices.
  • Basic familiarity with military systems or related defence technologies (desirable).
  • Familiarity of System Engineering in an ASDEFCON context (desirable).
  • Familiarity in using systems engineering software tools and simulation environments (e.g. DOORS, Cameo Systems Modeler, etc.).
  • Basic analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to clearly convey technical information verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.


Applicants must be Australian citizens and hold or be able to obtain a NV1 security clearance. Information including past and present nationality and citizenship may be requested to check eligibility for access to materials controlled under various export control regimes, including ITAR.
