The opportunity
Saab Australia is an industry participant in the Combat Systems Integration – Integrated Project Team (CSI-IPT) Collaboration Agreement (CSI-IPT CCA). The CSI-IPT CCA forms a collaborative enterprise organisation to execute scopes of work across Hobart Class Destroyer (SEA4000 Phase 6 and other related Destroyer Capability Enhancement (DCE) upgrades) and the Hunter Class Frigates (HCFs - SEA5000 Phase 1). This will see independently executed programs such as SEA4000 Phase 6 and SEA5000 Phase 1 brought under one umbrella enterprise organisation, the CSI-IPT.
The CSI-IPT will be built up with personnel from three industry participants and the Commonwealth of Australia (CoA) to form a collaborative team working across multiple programs to leverage synergies between platforms.
The role
As part of our Engineering and Sustainment Services group, the DDG Design Approval Engineer will delegate Technical Authority (TA) with responsibility for discharging the CSI-IPTs engineering obligations on behalf of the CSI-IPT DDG STA. The DDG DAE ensures that the subsystem artefacts, engineering CDRL’s and services delivered for the following DDG subsystems to achieve the standard required for certification in Navigation and Communication and Information.
The DDG upgrade program has three designated DAE’s across the 10 subsystem certification boundaries, they are specifically, Integrated Systems and Sensors, Fire Control Loop and Support Systems and Infrastructure.
Further, the successful candidate will:
- Assist the CSI-IPT DDG STA with establishing and maintaining the Engineering and Technical Authority components of the CSI-IPT Management System.
- Establish and maintain necessary technical competency standards.
- Ensure that designs are adequately reviewed by Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (SQEP).
- Review, approve and release allocated engineering management plans and procedures for CoA (MIWS AEO) endorsement, and work instructions for participants in support of DDG delivery.
- Review, approve and release allocated project designs and associated artefacts in support of designated Mandated System Reviews (MSR) and project delivery milestones in accordance with the System Review Plan (DDGCSI-000006).
- Compile and maintain the body of Objective Quality Evidence in support of issuing subsystem Design Certificates within the scope of the delegated certification area of expertise as authorised by the DDG STA.
- Prepare relevant Judgement of Design Significance in collaboration with relevant Program Engineering Managers.
- Through application of engineering governance, independently approve the seaworthiness aspects (including safety, cyber and fitness for purpose) of completed designs in accordance with the Naval Materiel Management framework.
Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office and a 9-day fortnight will be considered for this role.
About you
Your skills and experience will include:
- Tertiary qualification(s) in a relevant discipline (systems engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field etc.), and/or equivalent relevant experience (preferably within the defence industry).
- 15+ years in systems engineering, with extensive experience in complex systems, military systems, and software intensive systems, including four plus phases of the systems lifecycle.
- Three or more formal leadership positions over teams on large-scale, complex engineering bids or projects.
- Relevant professional certifications in systems engineering or related fields such as; Engineers Australia CPEng, INCOSE CSEP or ESEP (highly desirable).
- Demonstrated leadership and safety oversight on large-scale, complex engineering.
- Liasing with various CSI-IPT Technical Leads and Technical Authorities.
- Demonstrated leadership and safety oversight on large-scale, complex engineering.
- Coaching, mentoring, and developing team members to support succession planning goals.
Applicants must be Australian citizens and hold or be able to obtain an Australian Defence Security Clearance to NV1 level.
