The Role
The Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for supporting, maintaining, and improving the organisation’s core IT infrastructure services. The role provides technical support across on-premises VMware environments, backup and recovery platforms, server infrastructure, networking, wireless services, Microsoft Azure, and selected Microsoft 365 and SharePoint services. The post holder will help ensure that infrastructure services remain secure, reliable, available, and appropriately documented across both on-premises and cloud-based environments.
This role is based out of Fareham, with occasional travel to other Saab locations.
Key Responsibilities
Provide day-to-day operational support for on-premises VMware environments, including virtual machines, hosts, clusters, storage connectivity, and associated management platforms.
Monitor and maintain server, storage, network, wireless, cloud, and infrastructure services to support availability, performance, resilience, and security.
Assist with the administration and support of Microsoft Azure services, including virtual machines, storage, networking, identity-related services, monitoring, and backup services where applicable.
Administer and support backup and recovery services, including monitoring backup jobs, investigating failures, supporting restore activity, and assisting with routine recovery testing.
Provide technical support for LAN, WAN, switching, routing, firewall, VPN, wireless, and Azure networking services.
Support Microsoft 365 services, including Exchange Online, Microsoft Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint Online, within the agreed scope of the role.
Administer and support SharePoint sites, permissions, document libraries, and standard configuration requests.
Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve infrastructure incidents, service requests, and technical problems in line with agreed service levels and operational priorities.
Maintain accurate infrastructure documentation, asset information, configuration records, operational procedures, and support knowledge articles.
Support infrastructure patching, upgrades, lifecycle management, change activity, and small-scale technical projects across on-premises and cloud environments.
Liaise with third-party suppliers, service providers, and internal stakeholders to resolve issues, manage escalations, and support continuous service improvement.
Comply with relevant IT policies, change control processes, security standards, and operational procedures.
Key Responsibilities and Skills
Required
Experience supporting VMware virtualization platforms within an on-premise infrastructure environment.
Good working knowledge of Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and related infrastructure services.
Experience supporting backup, recovery, and disaster recovery processes within a business environment.
Understanding of networking principles, including VLANs, routing, switching, firewalls, VPNs, wireless technologies, and cloud networking concepts.
Experience administering or supporting Microsoft 365 services, including SharePoint Online, Teams, OneDrive, and Exchange Online.
Awareness or practical experience of Microsoft Azure services, such as Azure virtual machines, storage, networking, identity, monitoring, and backup services.
Ability to diagnose and resolve technical incidents using structured troubleshooting methods.
Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical documentation.
Ability to prioritise workload, manage competing demands, and work effectively both independently and as part of a wider IT team.
Desirable
Experience with enterprise storage platforms, including SAN or NAS technologies.
Awareness of IT security controls, vulnerability management, infrastructure patching, and compliance requirements.
Experience working within an ITIL-aligned support or service management environment.
Relevant technical certifications in VMware, Microsoft, Azure, networking, backup, or infrastructure technologies.
Experience supporting infrastructure change, migration, modernisation, cloud adoption, or service improvement projects.
Experience working with hybrid infrastructure environments spanning on-premise services and Microsoft Azure.
