Lead System Engineer - Air Traffic Management

The role

As part of our Civil group, the Lead System Engineer - ATM will be the primary technical interface between the ATM product design authority’s development team (Europe), Saab ATM’s project and support teams (in Europe and Australia) and the customer. The role will be responsible for managing the project’s requirements and design baselines, supporting successful integration outcomes, remediation of engineering issues and identification of opportunities for product improvement.

The Lead System Engineer – ATM will be the in-country system engineering specialist for Saab ATM’s systems, supporting tender response, contract development and delivery phases for Air Traffic Management projects.

To be successful in this role, you must be highly motivated, have excellent stakeholder management skills, be a confident communicator, demonstrate critical thinking, be delivery focussed, and have a keen interest and extensive experience of integrating complex software systems within the Air Traffic Management domain.

Further, the successful candidate will:

  • Map customer requirements to system solutions based on Saab’s Air Traffic Management product portfolio.
  • Perform requirements analysis, develop requirement specifications, lead the design activities and support the verification and validation of solutions.
  • Develop external interface specifications, system design documents.
  • Contribute to the development and review of acceptance test documents and the detailed parameterisation description.
  • As the ATM system technical specialist, coordinate with project engineers including Safety and Security specialty functions to ensure that the system design incorporates required controls to meet agreed Safety, Security and Quality requirements.
  • Coordinate with product software development teams in the specification, design, development and verification of customer-specific solutions.
  • Coordinate with product development teams in the specification and verification of hardware to satisfy requirements.
  • Responsible for design decisions and for ensuring that design is clearly and comprehensively documented to apply in a consistent manner across projects in a program of work.
  • As the ATM system technical specialist, support the integration engineers in deploying, configuring, integrating and test ATM system software and parameterisation in factory and on site.

Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office and a 9-day fortnight will be considered for this role.

About you

Your education, skills and experience will include:

  • Degree in software engineering/electronic engineering/computer science with suitable recent software experience.
  • Eligible for chartered engineering status and state engineering registration (Queensland/Victoria).
  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in ATM domain including system design and integration.
  • In-depth knowledge of network, network security, XML and Linux.
  • Knowledge of virtualisation technologies.
  • Test and validation of software.
  • Familiar with hardware selection and rationale.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the system engineering process, including requirements management, system design, integration, test and validation.
  • Ability to undertake high-level requirements derivation, system design and implementation.
  • Ability to review and interpret specifications, interface documentation, drawings and estimates.
  • Understand complex technical issues and manage them within project cost, time and quality constraints.
  • Ability to write clear and precise technical reports.
  • Well-developed written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated awareness and ability to address whole of capability/systems issues, such as safety, Integrated Logistics Support (ILS), cybersecurity and supportability.
  • Strong time management and organisational skills.
  • Experience in the Air Traffic Management domain is essential.
