Background
In modern radar systems, detecting and characterising targets quickly and accurately is essential for maintaining situational awareness and tactical advantage. Traditional radar processing chains rely on extensive pre‑processing of the incoming I/Q data; each processing step adds latency and introduces its own sources of noise, reducing overall system efficiency. As low‑observable threats such as small drones become increasingly common, the need to improve detection sensitivity has become more urgent.
These challenges have created demand for innovative approaches that use artificial‑intelligence techniques to streamline radar signal processing. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence now provide an opportunity to explore whether AI models can detect radar targets and estimate their parameters (e.g. angle, speed and distance) directly from raw I/Q data. This can potentially reduce latency, improve sensitivity and overall accuracy, capabilities that are vital in defence applications where response time is critical.
Thesis Description
The thesis will investigate the potential of AI-based algorithms for detection and characterization of targets directly from raw I/Q data in bistatic radar systems. Successful outcomes could deliver more sensitive, real-time target detection in complex, high-noise environments.
The project will involve:
- reviewing state‑of‑the‑art AI methods for radar target detection and characterisation,
- designing and implementing a model tailored to interpret raw I/Q data with minimal preprocessing,
- training the model on diverse datasets to recognize various target signatures.
- evaluating the model’s performance in terms of inference speed and accuracy in comparison to conventional methods,
- testing the model’s ability to generalise across different bistatic configurations and noise levels.
This thesis offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge technology in electronic warfare and defence systems.
