Master Thesis, 30 HP: A Comprehensive AI Framework for Air Traffic Management: Optimizing Taxi Routes, Runway Capacity, and Temporary Area Closures

Göteborg,
Sweden
Closing date: 30 November 2025

Are you a student eager to apply your theoretical knowledge and fresh perspectives to real-world challenges? At Saab, we believe that innovation thrives on new ideas, and your master thesis project could be the spark that ignites our next technological breakthrough.

Your role

We recognize the immense value that students bring to our company. Your academic rigor, combined with your enthusiasm for cutting-edge technology, allows you to approach problems with a unique and insightful lens. At Saab, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with experienced engineers and specialists, gaining invaluable practical experience while making a tangible contribution to our growth and development.

Background

In the rapidly evolving field of air traffic management, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) offers unprecedented opportunities to enhance efficiency, safety, and capacity. As a leading developer of air traffic management (ATM) software, SAAB has been at the forefront of innovating solutions that enhance these critical aspects of global air traffic systems. With a rich history of technological advancements and a deep understanding of the aviation industry, the company has consistently delivered cutting-edge software that supports air navigation service providers, airports, and airlines worldwide.

As air traffic continues to grow, so do the complexities and challenges associated with managing it. Key areas such as optimising taxi routes, maximising runway capacity, and efficiently handling temporary area closures have become critical for maintaining smooth and safe operations. These challenges are exacerbated by the need to integrate new technologies, adhere to stringent regulatory standards, and adapt to dynamic environmental conditions.

Description of the master thesis

To address these multifaceted issues, the organisation recognises the need for a master thesis that focuses on developing a comprehensive AI framework for ATM. This research will explore advanced AI algorithms and machine learning techniques to provide innovative solutions for optimising taxi routes, enhancing runway capacity, and managing temporary area closures. By leveraging AI, the organisation aims to improve operational efficiency, reduce delays, lower fuel consumption, and ultimately contribute to a more sustainable and resilient air traffic management system.

The thesis will not only advance the theoretical understanding of AI applications in ATM but also provide actionable insights and tools that can be integrated into the organization’s software, fostering innovation and maintaining a competitive edge in the industry.

During the thesis work, you can learn from and will partly work together with engaged system and software engineers who are developing the state-of-the-art of modern air traffic management in close contact to a wide range of international air traffic airport customers and aviation regulators.

Your profile

This Master Thesis is suitable for 2 students with an interest in applying advanced AI and data science techniques to real-world problems in the aviation industry.

You are at the end of your studies in computer/data science or closely related and about to start your Master Thesis work for 30 HP. You have good programming skills in languages such as (preferred) Python and SQL plus potentially C++ or Java, with experience in AI and machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn and/or experience in data analysis and visualization tools, such as Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib, or Tableau, to handle and interpret complex datasets. In your studies, you should have completed coursework in AI and machine learning such as ‘Introduction to Artificial Intelligence’, ‘Machine Learning’, ‘Data Mining and Analytics’. A solid understanding of mathematics, including probability, statistics, and linear algebra would be beneficial for developing and implementing AI algorithms.

Familiarity with air traffic management systems, procedures, and regulations or other previous experience or internships in the aviation industry would be beneficial, but not strictly required.

We provide the support and guidance you need to translate your theoretical knowledge into practical solutions. Join us and become a driving force behind Saab's technological advancements!

This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
