Develop an algorithm demonstrating how a compromise made in standard radar-signal processing may be circumvented
Background
High performing surveillance system are critical for our security, and are hence very valuable assets. Key elements of such systems are pulse Doppler radars, through which targets (such as approaching missiles) which may be detected at an early stage.
Target detection in pulsed Doppler radars boils down to detecting peaks in Doppler spectra, showing how the spectral energy of a signal distributes over different frequencies (Figure). One challenge is that low-energy targets may hide within the side lobes of high-energy targets (Panel a). This is counteracted by means of so-called tapering, which reduces the presence of side lobes (Panel b). The problem is that tapering reduces the heights of target peaks so that they can not be distinguised from noise (Panel b). Standard signal addresses the conflicting demands raised by noise and side lobes by computing a single spectrum using an intermediate level of tapering. An alternative approach is to compute several spectra, and combine them into one spectrum in which an adequate level of tapering is used for each frequency (Panel c). This circumvents the the trade-off raised by noise and side lobes, and makes it possible to detect otherwise lost target signals.
In this Master Thesis you will explore the idea of combined Doppler spectra. Your task is to find out how the idea may be implemented as an algorithm, and analyze how good target-perfection performance is achieved under different idealized conditions.
Your profile
The project is suitable for the highly motivated students with a strong mathematical drive. Proficiency in at least one programming language suitable for algorithm development (for instance MATLAB, Python, etc …) is required.
This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
