Master Thesis, 30 HP: Application of Next-Generation Modelica Libraries for Modeling and Simulation of Thermofluid Systems

Linköping,
Sweden
Closing date: 30 November 2025

Are you a student eager to apply your theoretical knowledge and fresh perspectives to real-world challenges? At Saab, we believe that innovation thrives on new ideas, and your master thesis project could be the spark that ignites our next technological breakthrough.

Your role

We recognize the immense value that students bring to our company. Your academic rigor, combined with your enthusiasm for cutting-edge technology, allows you to approach problems with a unique and insightful lens. At Saab, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with experienced engineers and specialists, gaining invaluable practical experience while making a tangible contribution to our growth and development.

Background

At Saab, dynamic simulation models play a key role in the development and evaluation of physical and control systems in airborne platforms. Emerging methods for modeling physical systems are showing great promise, enabling the creation of subsystem models that are more robust and computationally efficient than previous implementations.

One such method, Linear Implicit Equilibrium Dynamics (LIED), has been implemented in the open-source Modelica library Thermofluid Stream, which is increasingly being adopted at Saab. Historically, subsystem models for Gripen E have been developed using both commercial and proprietary Modelica libraries that do not utilize LIED.

Description of the master thesis

This thesis project will focus on applying and further developing Thermofluid Stream to meet Saab’s current and future needs for thermofluid system modeling and simulation.

Given the continuous demand for faster simulation results, greater use of open-source solutions, and improved portability, the project will involve:

  • 1. Evaluating the benefits of migrating selected model components to the Thermofluid Stream library.
  • 2. Modeling selected components using Thermofluid Stream.
  • 3. Adapting relevant Thermofluid Stream components to the application case as required.
  • 4. Verifying the new components against existing library models using Saab’s automated verification methodology.
  • 5. Extending the verification methodology with additional functionality for Design of Experiments (DoE).

Step 3 may require extensive analysis of mathematical structures to ensure accurate representation of real-world equipment while maintaining model robustness.

The application case will be based on components from the Gripen E’s Environmental Control System, with particular focus on the compressor and turbine components of the pneumatic bleed air system. Any relevant general improvements to Thermofluid Stream will be proposed for inclusion in the official library, supporting the open-source initiative and contributing Saab’s requirements to its future development.

The work will be carried out within the Systems Simulation and Concept Development section of the General Aircraft Vehicle Systems department at Saab Aeronautics in Linköping Tannefors. The work will be co-supervised by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) – Institute of System Architectures in Aeronautics, which develops the Thermofluid Stream Library. Students are also invited to take advantage of the opportunity of a short research stay at the DLR facility near Munich.

Your profile

We are seeking one to two Master’s students who want to contribute to this work. A solid foundation in modeling and control engineering or mathematics is a prerequisite. Specific experience in physical modeling is not required—strong support will be available at Saab—but will be considered an advantage. Programming experience, particularly in Python and Modelica, is also beneficial.

We provide the support and guidance you need to translate your theoretical knowledge into practical solutions. Join us and become a driving force behind Saab's technological advancements!

This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply.
