Background

Saab AB, Training and Simulation, provides customers with realistic ground combat training systems from brigade level to individual soldier training. We want to explore the potential in applied AI to investigate novel ways to further enhance shooting skill development through intelligent analysis of data.

Sensors measuring body posture and movement patterns could create even more understanding of which factors correlate with shooting accuracy. Using motion capture technology and stereo cameras, it is possible to collect comprehensive biomechanical data. AI systems is needed to identify minimal sensor configurations for effective real-time feedback while maintaining training efficacy.

Description of the master thesis

Selected candidates will develop AI-driven approaches to motion analysis and sensor optimization, creating machine learning models that process multimodal sensor data and provide interpretable insights for marksmanship training.

Example 1 – AI-Driven Sensor Optimization for Shooting Posture Analysis

Develop machine learning algorithms to identify minimal sensor configurations from full-body motion capture that maintain shooting performance prediction accuracy. Involves feature engineering, multi-objective optimization, and explainable AI methods for real-time training feedback.

Example 2 – Computer Vision and Sensor Fusion for Marksmanship Assessment

Create AI systems combining stereo camera data with other sensors for comprehensive shooting analysis. Includes deep learning for pose estimation, sensor fusion algorithms, confidence estimation, and temporal analysis of shooting sequences.

Technical AI/ML Focus Areas:

  • Multimodal sensor fusion and data integration

  • Feature selection and dimensionality reduction for wearable sensors

  • Explainable AI for training feedback and decision support

  • Confidence estimation for trustworthy feedback

  • Real-time machine learning inference for training scenarios

Your profile

We seek students completing their master's studies in AI Engineering, Computer Science, or similar fields with strong backgrounds in:

  • Machine learning and deep learning methodologies

  • Computer vision and signal processing

  • Statistical analysis and data science

It is considered a bonus if you have:

  • Experience with sensor data analysis or motion capture

  • Interest in explainable AI and human-computer interaction
