Master Thesis, 30 hp: Cost and performance optimization of a modular CBRNe sensor platform
Are you a student eager to apply your theoretical knowledge and fresh perspectives to real-world challenges? At Saab, we believe that innovation thrives on new ideas, and your master thesis project could be the spark that ignites our next technological breakthrough.
Your role
We recognize the immense value that students bring to our company. Your academic rigor, combined with your enthusiasm for cutting-edge technology, allows you to approach problems with a unique and insightful lens. At Saab, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with experienced engineers and specialists, gaining invaluable practical experience while making a tangible contribution to our growth and development.
Background
Saab is a leading company in CBRNe sensor integration (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, explosives) into complete DIM Systems (Detection Identification Monitoring) to detect release of CBRNe substances. The release of such substances can be either accidental or deliberate (Terrorist attacks, nuclear weapons, chemical- / Biological attacks).
The CBRNe sensors are usually installed in sensor nodes that can be either stationary (land / sea), soldier-carried or vehicle mounted (UAV/UGV, cars, trucks, naval vessels etc.). The sensor data is collected and presented in the Saab software, CBRN Canari, that provides a consolidated CBRNe situational picture.
Saab has developed a modular sensor platform (MSP-box), consisting of a weather- and EMC sealed stainless steel box, inside which CBRNe sensors are integrated. The lid is equipped with fan controlled air inlet/outlet, providing a controlled air flow over the CBRN sensors inside the MSP-box.
The MSP box is a complete sensor node for “easy” installation on different vehicle types. The current version of the MSP box is optimized with respect to environmental- and EMC performance without taking cost- and production efficiency into account.
Description of the Thesis Project
The purpose of this thesis project is to design version 2.0 of the MSP-Box, taking both performance and production cost/efficiency into account.
The thesis will include the following tasks:
1) Make a Project Plan, compliant with the Saab Engineering processes as well as the requirements from your university supervisor.
2) Analyze and rank the stakeholder- and system requirements with respect to different Use Cases.
3) Find cost drivers in the present design, investigate and suggest alternative components and “modules” for the new MSP-Box
4) Present a new MSP-Box design, using 2) and 3) above as starting points in the design work.
5) If time admits: Build a concept prototype for demonstration purposes.
Your profile
The project is suitable for two students with interests in Mechanical- and Electrical Engineering as well as Production Economy.
You are in the final stage of your Master’s program in Electrical- or/and Mechanical Engineering or similar and are about to begin a 30 hp thesis project
We provide the support and guidance you need to translate your theoretical knowledge into practical solutions. Join us and become a driving force behind Saab's technological advancements!
